2 Common Core =  National Curriculum adopted by most states (including NC) for English/Language Arts/Literacy & Math Essential Standards =  State Curriculum for all other content areas (including the Arts) that replaces the NC Standard Course of Study Common Core/Essential Standards

3  Arts Essential Standards - Online Modules Understanding and Implementing the new Arts Education Essential Standards  All modules are posted and ready for your review  Credit will be issued for (Modules 1, 2, 4, & 5) of SRN 125103801 (Module 3/Day 3 RttT credit is provided at your school)  Content-Specific PLTs are having powerful conversations about the new Essential Standards.  Google ? - What additional Arts resources would be helpful? 4  Activities that link the Arts with Common Core Language Arts/Literacy Strands will continue to be provided (see the email attachment for grades 7 & 9/10 Reading Literature) [Screen Shots in the next 2 slides]  Share your integrated practices with Literacy Coaches, IRTs, APIs, & Principals. The Arts do this naturally - don’t hesitate to communicate your efforts, collaborate, and serve as role models!  Google ? - What additional Literacy resources would be helpful? 5 Review the Reading Literature Standards for either grade 7 or grades 9/10 and consider using the Arts Links, adapting, or making your own. This sheet has been attached to the original email regarding this Dept. Chair Mtg.

8 Placement Assessment Work Groups 4/18/12 The following representatives will be working on the 18 th to identify placement assessments that will help support the new course designations. They will also have an opportunity to “translate” the current pacing guides for level I courses into course guides that reflect the new essential standards. Band – Biasi, Edwards Dance – Hamblen, Newhouse, Penuel Theatre – Jones, Winter Visual Art 2d – Barthelmess, Hansen Visual Art 3d – Poppe, J Stevenson If you have information that might be helpful to them, please email them directly. Google ? – What communication needs to occur between middle & high school teachers to ensure a smooth transition between the grade spans? What is the best format for that communication?
