TSP MONITORING  Total Suspended Particulate monitoring started in 2012  American Ecotech’s MegaVol 3000  24 hour every 6 days  Same suits of four radionuclides  Additional radionuclides  Start another monitoring in Towaoc in 2015-baseline and background?

DUST STUDY 2014  Done during April and May-based on the strongest wind season of the year from 2012 and 2013 meteorological record  2011 USGS study indicated the offsite migration of airborne pollutants depositing away from the White Mesa Mill source  We wanted to know if the Community’s ambient air contained the radionuclides, and if so, what kind  Selected locations based on Community’s opinions and wishes, and consulted the EPA QA Team for the sampling strategy  Study followed the methods after: Thomas, Patricia 1995 and 1999

DUST STUDY-DUST SAMPLING DEVICE

SAMPLING DEVICE DESIGN  Eight 105cm length of ½” rebar were welded into a table shape frame with four 100cm length of PVC ½” sleeves epoxied onto the top square part.  Three frames were secured onto a four foot t-post pounded into ground.  Adhesive sheet was secured onto the top square part adhesive-face down to collect the dust resuspended in air.  Adhesive sheet could be facing sky to collect passively deposited dust or facing side vertically to collect wind-blown dust.  We chose the “face-down” to start our study.

ADHESIVE SHEET INSTALLED

ADHESIVE SHEET FOR DUST COLLECTION  Adhesive transfer sheet, precut in 105cm x 105cm were placed on the square, adhesive side down. We selected 3M Corporation’s 467MPF after considering 5 adhesive tapes and selected 3 for the lab’s dry trial run.  We needed them to stay impervious to intense elements and sticky enough to hold dust for the duration of sampling. Lab needed the adhesive to be acrylic and thin enough for the high pressure microwave digestion method (EPA 3052) and coated onto an acid-resistant liner which could just be lifted and rinsed out of the solution after the dust containing adhesive was digested.  467MPF had acrylic adhesive 2 millimeter thick and lined with an acid-resistant polyester liner on one side, and it was the lab’s preference for its best adaptability to the method.  We set out the 7 strips of 467MPF tapes onto our proto-type frame and collected dust for 7days. These strips were sent to the lab for a test analysis.  Analytical results were satisfactory for our data interests and quality.

SAMPLING LOCATION SELECTION AND STRATEGY  One location was just by the White Mesa AQ station-where high volume total suspended particle (TSP) location condition monitoring is taking place.  Two other locations were selected guided by the community’s input about where the most vulnerable populations of community spends time-one by the ball field and one by the education department.  Three samples were collected at each of three sites (9 dust samples total per sampling event) along with 1 field blank (10 total).  Ten samples were collected per a sampling event over three sampling events (30 samples grand total.

SAMPLING DURATION  Duration of sampling was seven days per a sampling event.  Three sampling events took place from April to May 2014.  The period was chosen for the highest wind average recorded from the previous year’s monitoring.

COMPLETE SAMPLING DEVICE

SHIPPING SAMPLES  After 7 days, the exposed sheets were cut off from the frame using the razor blade and a meter stick in 1m x 1m square and folded adhesive sides in to seal loose dust.  The sheets then were folded two more times to seal in two-gallon Ziploc bags.  Three shipping was made a day after each sample retrieval.  Our lab: Saskatchewan Resource Council’s Laboratory http://www.src.sk.ca/pages/default.aspx

ANALYTES We selected the following analyses for these dust samples: Gross alpha Gross beta Isotopes of Uranium (calculated) Isotopes of Thorium Radium 226 Polonium 210 Lead 210 Gamma and other metal scans

RESULT Some of the results showed an increase in decay rates during the 1 st and 3 rd sampling period (April 30 to May 7 and May 14 to May 21, 2014).
