3.  Levi Strauss created jeans.  They were created during the gold rush.  Strauss came to America in 1853.

4.  Jeans are casual pants that are durable.  They are comfortable  They are blue  They are popular with many people including fashion models  Our friend Joe Faris is a designer and owns Motor City Denim.

5.  Cotton is grown from the ground to make the denim.  Rivets and zippers are made from iron.

6.  Cotton is dyed blue  Zippers are made from iron  Rivets are made from iron.  Jeans uses up water and fertilizer to grow the cotton that is not good for the environment.

7.  Picking cotton is a slow process so they use the automatic cotton picker.  People separate the cotton fiber from the twigs, leaves and seeds using a cotton gin.  It turns into a yellow color and then they die it blue. The die is not strong, so jeans can fade.  Motor City Denim jeans are made in Detroit.

8.  Jeans don’t use packaging, simply the boxes the factories use to ship to the stores and from the farm to the cotton factory. And from the cotton to the denim factory.

9.  Jeans are distributed to jean stores, clothing stores, Target, and many stores in malls that sell clothes.  Jeans made in America are not shipped very far. They are usually made in Mexico, which is not that far.  Jeans are made in many countries including France, China, Mexico and the U.S.

10.  Wearing jeans does not generate waste.  Jeans do not consume energy when you are the wearing them.

11.  Jeans can be reused by passing them down to family members or friends.  You can also donate them to shelters or Salvation Army.  Jeans can be recycled to make other clothes with denim.

12.  Jeans can be thrown away.   If you throw them in the trash, they will be sent to a landfill.
