2 Window Treatments Window coverings help control the environment in a home. They regulate the amount of light, muffle noise, insulate, and provide privacy.

3 Types of Window Treatments Curtains  Sheer curtains  Tailored curtains made to specifically fit to the size of the window  Sash curtains are attached with a rod on both the top and the bottom of a window Sheer curtains Sash curtains Tailored

4 More curtains… Café Curtains  Straight curtain hung from rings which slide along a bar which cover the bottom portion of a window Ruffled Curtains  Curtains edged with ruffles on the hems and sides Tie-back Curtains  Curtains which are tied back using the “golden section” rule Café Curtains Ruffled Curtains Tie back curtains

5 Draperies Usually made of heavier fabrics than curtains. Usually lined and hand in more formal interiors May draw across a rod or remain in place on either side of the window Draperies with swags Draperies Draw draperies Jabot Folded fabric that drapes down on either side of a swag or valance or between a series of swags

6 Other window coverings… Lambrequins  A cornice that extends down the side of the drapery Valance  Horizontal treatment across the top of a window usually made from fabric Swag or Scarf  Fabric draped over a pole or rod Cornice  Horizontal treatment across the top of a window usually made from wood and padded or covered with fabric. 7 Shutters oLouvered or fixed slats attached with hinges so that they can be opened or shut oUsually made from wood or plastic oOnce used solely to keep out heat and cold, now shutters are used to give a simple uncluttered look to a window and work well with traditional decors.

8 Shades Can be used alone or with curtains or draperies Pleated Shades  Solid fabric that folds into horizon tonal accordion pleats which are raised or lowered with cords – usually solid Roman Shades  Hangs flat when closed and folds horizontally in pleats when raised – made of fabric Balloon Shades  Fabric shade that is flat when down but pulls up into scallops – can also be stationary with scallops Roman shades Balloon shades Pleated shades

9 Shades Continued… Roller Shades Austrian Shades Can be used alone or with curtains or draperies Roller Shades Material is hung on a roller with a spring mechanism at the top of the window and is pulled down to close Austrian Shades Fabric shade that is gathered in scallops when pulled down – when pulled up scallops become tighter at bottom

10 Blinds Window coverings made of a series of evenly spaced slats that may be opened or closed by cords Venetian blinds  Wide slats of wood, metal or plastic which hand horizontally from a track which can be drawn up Vertical blinds  Wide slats of wood, metal or plastic that are hung vertically from a track and are drawn to one side Venetian blinds Vertical blinds
