Viruses instruct your computer to perform destructive activities such as erasing files Security of Personal Information Spyware Tracks computer user’s Internet usage and sends this data back to the company or person that created it Malware A term that describes the harmful intent on another’s computer Spoofed Sites A web site set up to look like another Web site but which doesn’t belong to the organization ex – a bank

6 W HAT ARE SOME S ECURITY T HREATS BUSINESSES MUST DEAL WITH TODAY ? Similar URLs Site developer creates an address on the Web that looks similar to a URL from the legitimate site so they can get customers information ex – credit card # Phishing Refers to practice of sending e-mails to potential customers of legitimate Web sites asking them to click a link that leads to spoofed sites where the user is asked to verity personal information Pharming A redirect from a legitimate site that sends customers to a criminal’s spoofed site

7 H OW CAN BUSINESSES PROTECT THEMSELVES FROM THESE PROBLEMS ? Antivirus Software that searches for files that can cause harm by erasing or disabling them Anti-Spyware Can detect when a program is tracking your internet usages, the use of spyware, and deletes the program Firewall Hardware or software that prevents other computer on the Internet from accessing your computer Router A device that controls traffic between network components and usually has a built-in-firewall Password A secret code needed to open files, email, etc. that helps protect you

9 ACTIVITY Create a flyer to inform classmates of 5 basic facts about your computer problem or solution. Do your best! Flyers will be posted around the room to share with others in a museum walk.
