1 Management & Development of Complex Projects Course Code - 706
MS Project Management Management & Development of Complex Projects Course Code - 706 Project Management Framework Lecture # 3

2 Summary of Previous Lecture
In previous Lecture, we have discussed about The process Complex Projects Triple Constraint concept Triple constraint concept with quality Project constraints Basis of the complexity of projects Factors of project management complexity

3 The Project Management Body of Knowledge
The Project Management Institute’s Body of Knowledge – PMBOK – is perhaps the most widely acknowledged and popular project management standard in existence. It is the basis for the PMI’s coveted PMP certification examinations. Presently in its fifth version (2013), PMBOK offers a comprehensive and sophisticated best practices and process-based standard which can be applied to different categories of projects. At the heart of the PMBOK are the ten areas of knowledge and five process groups which find application over the project life-cycle.

4 The 9 PMBOK Areas & 5 Process Groups
Integration Management Initiation 47 Scope Management PROCESSES Time Management Planning Cost Management Implementation Quality Management Project Management Knowledge Areas (PMBOK) Human Resource Management Closure Communication Management Risk Management Monitoring, Evaluation & Control Procurement Management Stakeholder Management

5 The Five Project Process Groups
Initiation Defines and authorizes the project (or a phase of the project). Refines the project goal, scope, requirements etc. and develops the project master plan. Planning Implementation Brings together all required resources to undertake the project in accordance with the master plan. Closure Formalizes acceptance of the project output by the project customer and brings the project to its end. Monitoring, Evaluation & Control Monitors the project to identify and assess shortfalls and variances and initiate corrective action if needed.

6 PMBOK Area: Integration Management
Project Integration Management includes the processes which are needed to identify, define, combine, unify and coordinate the various project management processes in the project process groups ( processes include develop the project charter, develop project management plan, direct and manage project execution, monitor and control project work, perform integrated change control & close project or phase). Integration is crucial for project completion, meeting stakeholder expectations and needs, making choices where to concentrate resources over time, dealing with issues and coordinating project activities.

7 PMBOK Area: Scope Management
Project Scope Management includes the processes required to ensure that the project includes all – and only the – work needed for its successful completion. In other words, scope management asks what is included in the project. Completion of the project scope is measured against the project management plan where the requirements and specifications of the project output are given. Processes covered under Project Scope Management are Plan Scope Management, Collect Requirements, Define Scope, Create WBS, Validate Scope & Control Scope.

8 PMBOK Area: Time Management
Project Time Management includes the processes required to ensure the completion of the project within the time-frame which has been allocated for it. Processes covered under Project Time Management are Plan Schedule Management, Define Activities, Sequence Activities, Estimate activity Resources, Estimate Activity Durations, Develop Schedule & Control Schedule .

9 PMBOK Area: Cost Management
Project Cost Management includes the processes which are required to plan, manage and control costs so that the project can be completed within the budget allocated for it. Processes covered under project Cost Management are Plan Cost Management, Estimate Costs, Determine Budget, Control Costs.

10 PMBOK Area: Quality Management
Project Quality Management includes the processes for ensuring that the project satisfies the needs and requirements for which it was undertaken in the first place. Project Quality Management addresses both the project output (goal-focus) as well as the management of the project (process-focus). It recognizes the importance of customer satisfaction, prevention over inspection, management responsibility and continuous improvement. Processes covered under Project Quality Management are plan quality, perform quality assurance, and perform quality control.

11 PMBOK Area: Human Resource Management
Project Human Resource Management includes the processes needed to organize and manage the project team. Human resources are considered an organization’s “most important asset” and the same applies to projects. Processes covered under Project Human Resource Management are develop human resource plan, acquire project team, develop project team & manage project team.

12 PMBOK Area: Communications Management
Project Communications Management includes the processes needed to ensure timely and appropriate generation, collection, dissemination, storage, and ultimate disposition of project information. Considered the “life-blood” of a project, communication is often a challenging undertaking and difficulties in (or a total breakdown of) communication can severely impede a project. Processes covered under Project Communication Management are plan communication management, manage communications & control communications.

13 PMBOK Area: Risk Management
Project Risk Management includes the processes needed to manage the risks on the project with a view to reducing the likelihood of a negative impact on attainment of the project goal, the project cost and time, and the project stakeholders. Processes covered under Project Risk Management are plan risk management, identify risks, perform qualitative risk analysis, perform quantitative risk analysis, plan risk responses & monitor and control risks.

14 PMBOK Area: Procurement Management
Project Procurement Management includes the processes for acquiring or purchasing the materials, products, goods and services which are needed to perform the project work. Project Procurement Management includes the contract management and change control processes required to administer contracts or purchase orders issued by the project team. Processes covered under Project Procurement Management are plan procurements, Conduct procurements, administer procurements & close procurement .

15 PMBOK Area: Stakeholder Management
Project Stakeholder Management includes the processes required to identify the people, groups, or organizations that could impact or be impacted by the project, to analyze stakeholder expectations and their impact on the project, and to develop appropriate management strategies for effectively engaging stakeholders in project decisions and execution. Processes covered under Project Stakeholder Management are Identify stakeholders, plan stakeholder management & control stakeholder engagement.

17 The Project Management Body of Knowledge Construction Extension
While the PMBOK Guide provides a generic foundation for managing projects, this extension addresses the specific practices found in construction projects. This extension to the PMBOK describes the generally accepted principles for construction projects that are not common to all project types. Four more Knowledge Areas are added to this Construction Extension in addition to nine common Knowledge Areas of project management.

18 The Project Management Body of Knowledge Government Extension
While the PMBOK Guide provides a generic foundation for managing projects, this extension addresses the specific practices found in public sector projects. This extension to the PMBOK describes the generally accepted principles for public projects that are not common to all project types. The number of Knowledge areas are 9 in this guide however number of processes in each knowldge area varies from the PMBOK standard.

19 The Project Management Body of Knowledge Software Extension
While the PMBOK Guide provides a generic foundation for managing projects, this extension addresses the specific practices found in software projects. This extension to the PMBOK describes the generally accepted principles for software projects that are not common to all project types. This Extension is underway and will be released soon by PMI

20 PMBOK Area (Construction Extension) Project Safety Management
Project Safety Management processes include all activities of the project sponsor/ owner and the performing organization which determine safety policies, objectives, and, responsibilities so the project is planned and executed in a manner that prevents accidents, which cause, or have the potential to cause, personal injury, fatalities, or property damage. Processes covered under Project Safety Management are Safety Planning, Perform Safety Assurance & Perform Safety Control

21 PMBOK Area (Construction Extension) Project Environmental Management
Project environmental management processes include all the activities of the project sponsor/owner and the performing organization which determine environmental policies, objectives, and, responsibilities, the purpose of which is to minimize the impact on the surrounding environment and natural resources and to operate within the limits stated in legal permits. Processes covered under Project Environmental Management are Environmental Planning, Perform Environmental Assurance & Perform Environmental Control.

22 PMBOK Area (Construction Extension) Project Financial Management
Financial management includes the processes to acquire and manage the financial resources for the project and, compared to cost management, is more concerned with revenue sources and monitoring net cash flows for the construction project than with managing day-to-day costs. Processes covered under Project Financial Management are Financial Planning, Perform Financial Control & Financial Administration & Records.

23 PMBOK Area (Construction Extension) Project Claim Management
Claim management describes the processes required to prevent construction claims, to mitigate the effects of those that do occur, and to handle claims quickly and effectively. Processes covered under Project Claim Management are Claim Identification, Claim Quantification, Claim Prevention & Claim Resolution.

24 Summary of This Lecture
In this Lecture, we have discussed about PMBOK 10 Knowledge Areas & Processes groups PMBOK Extensions Useage of documents in relation to complexity of project
