2. The Hated Questions ? Question: Do you have homework? Question: Is your homework done? Question: Is your homework complete? Question: Did you check your homework to make sure it is correct?

3. Answers Answer: We didn’t have any. Answer: I finished it in class. Answer: It will only take me a few minutes. Answer: The teacher said we would go over it in class.

4. Purpose of Homework Additional independent practice of concepts that have been taught in class. Independent Reading Gathering of knowledge or previewing material to be discussed in class. Completion of assignments not finished in class.

5. What Homework is Not New concepts not previously taught. Cause extreme frustration for the child. To be completed by anyone but the child. Should not be a majority of the students grade.

6. Parent Homework Tips Know your child’s homework schedule. Daily assignments - reading Weekly assignments – writing their words, sentences, and definitions. Tests and Quizzes

7. Tips Continued Help your child get organized. Create a homework folder. To do –Done Create a homework schedule. Create a special setting or space

8. To Do – Done Folder Most schools use planners and teachers want students to write the homework in the planner and parents are to check and sign or it used to communicate between parents and teachers. You can use an additional folder just for homework sheets or papers and assignments.

9. Homework Schedule Set a regular time for student to do homework. Help your child determine how much time each assignment will take and level of difficulty of each assignment.. Use a timer for each assignment. Give short 5 minute breaks every 20- 30 minutes Provide a healthy snack before students start their assignments.

10. Special Setting or Space Provide a place free from noise and distractions. Well lighted and have school supplies to complete assignments. If space is limited, create study board. Students enjoy creating it and they are easy to store.

11. Final Tips When your child does homework, you do “Homework” read the paper, balance the check book, pay bills etc. When your child asks for help provide guidance – not answers Do not teach short cuts or strategies that are not what are being taught in class. This might hinder a deeper understanding of the concepts

12. Tips Continued Be positive, even if you do not know how to do the child's work. Help your child try to recall how they did the problem in class, recall the steps, and look for examples in their notes or book. Ask if drawing a picture, diagram, list, tables or using manipulative such as buttons, pennies or other small household items will help.

13. More Tips If your child has tried everything they know and can still not complete the work, contact the teacher. Ask for a conference to help you know how to better assist your child. Ask for extra tutoring and resources that you can use at home.

14. Extra Practice Make Flash Card for vocabulary words and math facts. Read together, just for fun. Use math and reading when shopping, cooking, home repairs, riding in the car and doing daily activities.
