1 Parent Orientation What Your Child Does at School How to Help Your Child at Home General Things to Know

2 Main Reading Block 90 minutes Whole group and small group Small groups are formed by baseline tests and is adjusted after each unit based on their progress Small groups provide individualized instruction

3 Tiered Instruction During this time, struggling students are chosen to have more one-on-one time. Sight words are a main focus during this time. Decodables are also reread. Fluency in reading is a main goal!

4 What We’re Striving For! 90 words per minute by Spring 25 (x2) words per minute on sight word tests Quickly recognizes words without having to sound them out –This allows the child to spend less time figuring out what it says and more time figuring out what it means

5 Weekly Selection Tests Contains questions for students to use high-frequency words in sentences correctly Ask comprehension questions about the story for the week Has two writing questions for students to express what they learned All skills are gone over with students!

6 Reading Grades 75% Reading Tests 25% Fluency –Sight Words

7 Accelerated Reader Students need to be taking test on AT LEAST 3 books per week The more your child reads and takes tests, the better your child will do

8 Math Instruction Given in whole group instruction on the projector One skill is focused on each day Manipulatives are used Groups are chosen based on how well they understand the skill Animated lessons are also used Children MUST follow along and pay attention in order to understand!

9 Math Assignments Teach and Talk –Listen and follow instructions with consistent help from the teacher Practice –Students practice on their own with some guidance. –Shows which students need to be in which group for differentiated instruction Independent Practice –Students practice on their own using the same types of problems shown in the practice section Problem Solving –Students think deeper and apply their learning at a deeper level

10 Math Grades Tests –90% Fact Fluency –10%

11 Math Facts in a Flash Students practice math facts on the computer Gives students two minutes Focuses on only one set of a facts at time Students need to reach 19 levels at least

12 Math Facts Test Students will be given math facts to practice each week Homework will also be provided to students at the beginning of the week Student will have one minute to complete the facts test –25 per minute

13 Language Arts Spelling Words –Must study nightly –At school, words are reviewed at least two times per day –Homework is in folder! It will help! Language Skill –Found on worksheet that is sent home on Tuesdays –Can also be located on the lesson plan

14 Language Arts Grades Language Tests –70% Spelling Tests –20% Handwriting –10% Handwriting Grades: –U = 60 –N = 70 –S- = 80 –S = 90 –S+ = 100

15 How To Help Children at Home Complete spelling homework Time students on sight words Put sight words on flash cards to study Read story nightly Ask questions about story Call spelling words out in car Use worksheets to review skills Make sure child is completing work at school & finish any work not completed Practice math facts Call math facts out

16 How to Help Children at Home All tips can be found on sheet that is in S.A.F.A.R.I. binder Use the classroom website to locate any helpful materials or websites

17 General Information Snack is 75 cents!!! Milk is still 50 cents! Slushy is given on Wednesday for 50 cents –No checks can be had to get slushy Be sure to send transportation notes for ANY changes! $1.25 per day or $6.25 a week

18 Notes and Money Notes –If you send a transportation note, please make sure to include the following: Child’s name Mode of transportation Date Teacher’s name Money –Label all money –Separate snack and lunch money –Write child’s name on envelope –Lunch money should have their lunch number on it as well

19 General Information If your child is absent, please send a note to be excused. Otherwise, your child is mark unexcused! Please review the class rules and expectations with your children! Children need to listen in order to learn!
