Introduction to Poetry Class meet poetry, poetry meet class
W.B.Yeats, Politics HOW can I, that girl standing there, My attention fix On Roman or on Russian Or on Spanish politics? Yet here's a travelled man that knows What he talks about, And there's a politician That has read and thought, And maybe what they say is true Of war and war's alarms, But O that I were young again And held her in my arms!
What is poetry? Princeton defines it as: literature in metrical form May be written independently, as discrete poems, or may occur in conjunction with other arts, as in poetic drama, hymns or lyrics. This means poetry can be rap and music!
Important Vocabulary Stanza- a fixed number of lines of verse forming a unit of a poem – See examples for couplet, tercet, and quatrain
