Most people prefer to do work that uses their interests and talents  Your talents or skills are things you are good at  Your interests are your favorite activities Think about jobs that might suit your skills and interests EXPLORING THE WORLD OF WORK

4  Do people work just to make money or is it more than that?  Most people have to work, if you determine what you want to do, work can be very rewarding  Each year, a full time employee works 2,000 hours WHAT IS WORK?

5 A job can be defined as work (certain tasks) people do for pay, sometimes jobs can turn into a career. A career is a series of related jobs built on a foundation of interest, knowledge, training and experience. As you gain more experience you usually find more challenging and better paying positions. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor, the average American will have more than 8 different jobs by the time their 32. JOBS VS. CAREERS

6 Your lifestyle is the way you use your time, energy and resources Your work can determine how much time you have to spend with your family & friends It also depends how much money you have to pursue your favorite activities IMPACT ON LIFESTYLE

7 People work to earn money to pay for: HousingInsurance Transportation Food Clothes Health Care/Prescription Plans Education Taxes Recreation WHY PEOPLE WORK

8 People also work because they enjoy being with other people Working at a job that suits you gives you a feeling of accomplishment and self-fulfillment Why is it a bad idea to choose a job just because it pays well? WHY PEOPLE WORK

11 An economy is how a group produces, distributes, and consumes its goods and services The job market is the demand for particular jobs As part of the global economy, consumers can buy products from around the world The global economy is the worldwide linkage of national economies. It has a direct impact on the job market Keeping informed about the developments in the global economy can help you learn more about the worldwide job market. What’s being created, which jobs are being sent abroad, etc. ECONOMY & JOB MARKET

12 Employers will need employees with a variety of transferable skills, such as: Basic Skills Thinking Skills Communication Skills Personal Qualities (Soft-skills) Modern technology influences not only what work you do, but how and where you do it THE CHANGING WORKPLACE

13 Trends you may encounter in the workplace include Teams Outsourcing Telecommuting Teams – An organized group that sets goals, makes decisions, and implements actions within a company. People work together on a common goal rather than a manager telling them what to do Outsourcing – A practice in which businesses hire other companies or individuals to produce their services or goods TRENDS IN TODAY’S WORKPLACE

14 Telecommuting – performing a job at home using technology, especially computers, personal mobile devices; iphones, ipads instead of company issued computers Around 30 million people do not work exclusively at the job site TRENDS IN TODAY’S WORKPLACE

15 The workplace is changing, however, you’ll be involved with technology in some form ~ especially computers & mobile devices in whatever field you choose You have to know how to use a computer! IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON TODAY’S WORKERS
