Tracker Support Tube Tracker EDR November 15th/16th 2000 M.Oriunno CERN/EP Requirements and Materials High radiation transparency i.e. low mass density  High Stiffness E i.e. E/  High position stability in the time i.e. low CTE and CME Radiation Hardness

Tracker Support Tube Tracker EDR November 15th/16th 2000 M.Oriunno CERN/EP For lightweight structures, as the Tracker, a sandwich shell cylinder is the best compromise between weight and stiffness. The limited space available for the structure, makes definitively sandwich construction the best choice.

Tracker Support Tube Tracker EDR November 15th/16th 2000 M.Oriunno CERN/EP Manufacturing Composite Structures can be manufactured following different processes, achieving the same results: –Vacuum Moulding –Autoclave –Filament Winding The crucial item in the definition of manufacture costs is the tooling design The cost of raw material is only 20% of the total cost High performance materials affect the total costs in terms of complicated curing procedure For high performance materials, the quality of the final product depends strongly on the experience of the manufacturer

Tracker Support Tube Tracker EDR November 15th/16th 2000 M.Oriunno CERN/EP Manufacturing Study I The conventional way to manufacture sandwiches is the mould process with curing in an autoclave, using moulds made of carbon fibres reducing the thermal mismatch between the moulds and the sandwich during the cure, if the final tolerance on the dimensions is tight. Processes like filament winding require relatively simple tooling, allowing the production of the entire cylinder in one go Filament winding is widely used for manufacturing of medium size fuselages in the aeronautical industry where the size of the series pays off the manufacturing cost of the tooling: this is not the case for the TST where only one piece has to be made

Tracker Support Tube Tracker EDR November 15th/16th 2000 M.Oriunno CERN/EP Manufacturing Study II Medium-size companies, having experience on same size structures have been contacted to produce a preliminary study on the technological feasibility. The proposed solution are very similar: Composite Optic Industries(USA) Plyform (Italy)  Composite Tooling and Structure (UK)
