1990 Iraq invaded Kuwait (Persian Gulf War) Saddam Hussein wanted control over Kuwait's oil fields Saddam wanted more access to Persian Gulf

7 Persian Gulf War The United States responded as an ally of Kuwait.
To prevent Saddam Hussein from having power/ oil. Along with other nations, USA recaptured Kuwait in 1991. Operation Desert Storm Air attacks and ground forces forced Iraqis out of Kuwait

8 Persian Gulf War Before leaving Kuwait Iraqi forces set fire to oil rigs causing an immense amount of economic damage to Kuwait's Oil industry.

The United Nations (UN) imposed a trade embargo when Iraq invaded Kuwait. This prevented Iraq from exporting goods Remained even after the Persian Gulf War Removed when WMD destroyed… UN inspection left in 1998 85% were destroyed Some believed Hussein was hiding WMDs.

20 AL QAEDA After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, al-Qaeda (pronounced al-KYE-da) surpassed Hamas and Hezbollah as the world's most infamous terrorist organization. Al-Qaeda—"the base" in Arabic—is the network of Muslim extremists organized by Osama bin Laden. -

21 TALIBAN The Taliban ("Students of Islamic Knowledge Movement") ruled Afghanistan from 1996 until They came to power during Afghanistan's long civil war. Although they managed to hold 90% of the country's territory, their policies—including their treatment of women and support of terrorists—ostracized them from the world community. The Taliban was ousted from power in December 2001 by the U.S. military and Afghani opposition forces in response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the U.S. -

November 2001 US ground forces entered Afghanistan to disarm the Taliban and find bin Laden At first efforts were successful: US was helping rebuild new democracy in Afghanistan. HOWEVER…bin Laden still remains unfound; Taliban has retreated to Pakistan and still attacks Afghanistan Suicide bombers Roadside bombs Attacks on US and international military posts

All of the following are reasons for the United States invading the country of Afghanistan in 2001. U.S. wanted to punish and remove the Taliban regime for supporting al-Qaeda terrorists. U.S. begins campaign known as the War on Terrorism after responding to 9/11 terrorist attacks. U.S. attempts to capture terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden.

Saddam didn’t comply with inspectors. 2003 US, Britain, and other countries invaded Iraq. Iraqi government fell and the war was over in less than 2 mos. Hussein was captured, tried, and put to death

U.S. military intelligence indicated Saddam Hussein supported the Al Qaeda terrorist organization and was producing weapons of mass destruction. The invasion launched the Iraq War U.S. President George W. Bush wanted to: " disarm Iraq of weapons of mass destruction; end Saddam Hussein's support for terrorism; to free the Iraqi people”

37 Back to Iraq Temporary government was put in place until constitution was written. Still have roadside bombs, attacks on US forces, unemployment, civilian deaths and injuries, and Sunni/ Shia battles 2005 Iraqis took part of free elections to establish its democratic government. US govt plans to keep troops in Iraq until Iraqi police and soldiers can keep country stable.

38 US Involvement in Iraq Today
The United States is trying to keep the peace in Iraq – which is currently in a civil war. Sunni Muslims (minority group in Iraq) do not want the Shia Muslims (majority group) to control the government – which leads to violence.
