1 DISCERNING GOOD AND EVIL
Hebrews 5:12-14

2 Hebrews 5:12-14 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

3 DISCERNING GOOD AND EVIL
IS IT CONDEMNED IN GOD'S WORD?

4 Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 

5 2 John 9 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. 

6 DISCERNING GOOD AND EVIL
IS IT CONDEMNED IN GOD'S WORD? WILL IT HARM ME SPIRITUALLY?

7 Romans 8:1-2 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.

8 Romans 8:3-4 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

9 Romans 8:5-8 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

10 Romans 8:9-11 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

11 Romans 8:12-15 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors--not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father."

12 Romans 8:16-17 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs--heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. 

13 Galatians 5:16-18 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

14 Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

15 Galatians 5:22-26 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. 

16 DISCERNING GOOD AND EVIL
IS IT CONDEMNED IN GOD'S WORD? WILL IT HARM ME SPIRITUALLY? WILL IT HARM ME PHYSICALLY?

17 Sexual Immorality is Risky Behavior!
1 Corinthians 6:18-20 Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's.  Sexual Immorality is Risky Behavior!

18 Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 

19 All Immoral Activity is Risky Behavior!
Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.  All Immoral Activity is Risky Behavior!

20 2 Corinthians 7:1 Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

21 DISCERNING GOOD AND EVIL
IS IT CONDEMNED IN GOD'S WORD? WILL IT HARM ME SPIRITUALLY? WILL IT HARM ME PHYSICALLY? WILL IT LEAD OTHERS INTO SIN?

22 Romans 14:1-4 Receive one who is weak in the faith, but not to disputes over doubtful things. For one believes he may eat all things, but he who is weak eats only vegetables. Let not him who eats despise him who does not eat, and let not him who does not eat judge him who eats; for God has received him. Who are you to judge another's servant? To his own master he stands or falls. Indeed, he will be made to stand, for God is able to make him stand.

23 Romans 14:5-7 One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind. He who observes the day, observes it to the Lord; and he who does not observe the day, to the Lord he does not observe it. He who eats, eats to the Lord, for he gives God thanks; and he who does not eat, to the Lord he does not eat, and gives God thanks. For none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself.

24 Romans 14:8-11 For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord's. For to this end Christ died and rose and lived again, that He might be Lord of both the dead and the living. But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you show contempt for your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written: "As I live, says the Lord, Every knee shall bow to Me, And every tongue shall confess to God."

25 Romans 14:12-15 So then each of us shall give account of himself to God. Therefore let us not judge one another any-more, but rather resolve this, not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brother's way. I know and am convinced by the Lord Jesus that there is nothing unclean of itself; but to him who considers anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean. Yet if your brother is grieved because of your food, you are no longer walking in love. Do not destroy with your food the one for whom Christ died.

26 Romans 14:16-18 Therefore do not let your good be spoken of as evil; for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. For he who serves Christ in these things is acceptable to God and approved by men.

27 Romans 14:19-21 Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another. Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All things indeed are pure, but it is evil for the man who eats with offense. It is good neither to eat meat nor drink wine nor do anything by which your brother stumbles or is offended or is made weak.

28 Romans 15:1-3 We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, leading to edification. For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, "The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me." 

29 DISCERNING GOOD AND EVIL
IS IT CONDEMNED IN GOD'S WORD? WILL IT HARM ME SPIRITUALLY? WILL IT HARM ME PHYSICALLY? WILL IT LEAD OTHERS INTO SIN? WILL IT VIOLATE MY CONSCIENCE?

30 Romans 14:22-23 Do you have faith? Have it to yourself before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not eat from faith; for whatever is not from faith is sin.

31 DISCERNING GOOD AND EVIL
IS IT CONDEMNED IN GOD'S WORD? WILL IT HARM ME SPIRITUALLY? WILL IT HARM ME PHYSICALLY? WILL IT LEAD OTHERS INTO SIN? WILL IT VIOLATE MY CONSCIENCE? IS IT A WASTE OF TIME and/or MONEY?

32 Failure to Walk Cirumspectly
Ephesians 5:14-16 Therefore He says: "Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light." See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Failure to Walk Cirumspectly is a Waste of Time!

33 Luke 12:16-19 Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: "The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. And he thought within himself, saying, 'What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?' So he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry." '

34 Laying Up Treasure for Yourself
Luke 12:20-21 "But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?' "So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." Laying Up Treasure for Yourself is a Waste of Money!

35 1 Timothy 6:17-19 Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

37 DISCERNING GOOD AND EVIL
WILL IT HURT MY INFLUENCE?

38 Matthew 5:13-16 "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven."

39 1 Timothy 4:12 Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

40 DISCERNING GOOD AND EVIL
WILL IT HURT MY INFLUENCE? WILL IT PUT ME IN BAD COMPANY?

41 1 Corinthians 15:33 Do not be deceived: "Evil company corrupts good habits."

42 DISCERNING GOOD AND EVIL
WILL IT HURT MY INFLUENCE? WILL IT PUT ME IN BAD COMPANY? WOULD I BE ASHAMED OF DOING IT?

43 John 3:19-20 "And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed."

44 Hebrews 4:13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

45 DISCERNING GOOD AND EVIL
WILL IT HURT MY INFLUENCE? WILL IT PUT ME IN BAD COMPANY? WOULD I BE ASHAMED OF DOING IT? WILL I BE SEEKING FIRST GOD’S KINGDOM?

46 Matthew 6:31-33 "Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you."

47 Matthew 6:31-33 Putting God first will enable you to avoid living a dull life. Look again at Matthew chapter 6: “Is not life more than food, and the body than clothing?” (6:25) Placing all the emphasis on the physical, betrays a false view of human beings, as if they were only bodies needing to be fed, watered, clothed, and housed, and of human life, as if life were merely some sort of physical existence.

48 Matthew 6:31-33 “An exclusive preoccupation with food, drink, and clothing could be justified if physical survival were the be-all and end-all of existence. We just live to live” (Stott p. 162). The preoccupation with the material side of life downgrades human beings, but how many people in our society think that physical well being is the goal? Putting God first, frees a person to seek far more noble and worthy goals than working so they can retire.

49 Matthew 6:31-33 It is sad that so many people miss a lifetime of wonderful opportunities because their eyes are fixed on this earth. The Christian has been freed, by putting God first, to go out and pursue things that will last into eternity, to accomplish things that will really matter in the end, to accomplish something that will have eternal value, and to develop a character that can withstand the setbacks of life and will be honored in eternity.

50 1 Peter 1:6-7 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ,

51 2 Peter 1:5-11 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love.

52 2 Peter 1:5-11 For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

53 Matthew 6:31-33 It is sad that so many people miss a lifetime of wonderful opportunities because their eyes are fixed on this earth. The Christian has been freed, by putting God first, to go out and pursue things that will last into eternity, to accomplish things that will really matter in the end, to accomplish something that will have eternal value, and to develop a character that can withstand the setbacks of life and will be honored in eternity. I am convinced that most Christians do not believe that if they put God first in their lives that He will provide to us all of His promises...

54 DISCERNING GOOD AND EVIL
WILL IT HURT MY INFLUENCE? WILL IT PUT ME IN BAD COMPANY? WOULD I BE ASHAMED OF DOING IT? WILL I BE SEEKING FIRST GOD’S KINGDOM? WILL IT PROMOTE RIGHT THINKING?

55 Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy--meditate on these things.

56 Matthew 15:19 "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies."

57 Psalm 1:1-2 Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night.

58 DISCERNING GOOD AND EVIL
WILL IT HURT MY INFLUENCE? WILL IT PUT ME IN BAD COMPANY? WOULD I BE ASHAMED OF DOING IT? WILL I BE SEEKING FIRST GOD’S KINGDOM? WILL IT PROMOTE RIGHT THINKING? WILL I BE FOLLOWING CHRIST'S EXAMPLE?

59 1 Peter 2:18-20 Servants, be submissive to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the harsh. For this is commendable, if because of conscience toward God one endures grief, suffering wrongfully. For what credit is it if, when you are beaten for your faults, you take it patiently? But when you do good and suffer, if you take it patiently, this is commendable before God.

60 1 Peter 2:21-24 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: "Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth"; who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness--by whose stripes you were healed.

61 1 Corinthians 11:1 Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.

62 2 Corinthians 4:8-11 We are hard pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed-- always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus' sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.

63 Galatians 6:17 From now on let no one trouble me, for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus.

64 DISCERNING GOOD AND EVIL
IS IT CONDEMNED IN GOD'S WORD? WILL IT HARM ME SPIRITUALLY? WILL IT HARM ME PHYSICALLY? WILL IT LEAD OTHERS INTO SIN? WILL IT VIOLATE MY CONSCIENCE? IS IT A WASTE OF TIME and/or MONEY?
