OneNote in the Classroom Matthew Gabel Wright

What is OneNote? It is a program created by Microsoft, similar to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. Ultimately, it is a note-taking program that lacks the ridged structure of Word. It supports all types of content (images, video, audio, scribbling, etc.). There is no save button. Instead, it automatically saves and syncs to the cloud after every change. It allows for easy integration of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

How is it organized? OneNote is organized in Notebooks. Within each notebook, an infinite number of pages within sections and subsections can be created. Each page can be as large or as small as you want. The background of each page can be customized as well.

Sharing a Notebook Any notebook can be shared with anyone via a link or email. Each person it is shared with can be given editing privileges or view-only privileges. Because it does not need to be saved, it updates in real-time for anyone viewing the notebook. Notebooks can be viewed through OneNote, any web browser, or the Android/iOS app.

Using it in the Classroom This is how I use it… Online Link

Class Notebooks Classroom Notebooks are a variation of OneNote made specifically for teachers. It creates one notebook for each of your classes, each of which has three sections: Collaboration Space Content Library Student Notebooks

Collaboration Space A section where all students and teachers can view and edit. Students and teachers can work together on collaborative projects.

Content Library Only instructors can edit the content library. Students have view-only access. However, students can copy pages to their student notebook for editing. This is perfect for distributing handouts or posting class notes.

Student Notebooks This is a private space for each student. Instructors can view and edit all student notebooks, however, students can only view and edit their own notebook. In other words, students can not see other students notebooks. This is great for giving student feedback.

Notebooks in the Classroom How can we use this in class….

Gooru

What is Gooru It is an active learning tool that allows teachers to quickly create and assign interactive assignments for students to complete via a web browser or mobile device. Each activity can consists of any combination of videos, simulations, images, documents, or checkpoint questions. This allows instructors to easily target all learning styles.

What is Gooru It is not a Learning Management System It is not meant to replace any other tool you currently use. Simply put, it is one more tool to use in your classroom similar to YouTube, Kahoot, or CK12.

What is Gooru Everything is open source, meaning other teacher’s work is available to use and modify. Example The district is currently in the process of developing Gooru collections for all core content areas.

How to use it in the classroom Anyone can search and use collections without creating an account. You can then provide a link to those collections for your students to complete. If you create an account, you can save and modify collections to better suit your needs. Just remember, anything you create becomes public domain. If your students create an account, you can track their progress and their comprehension.
