1 The worlds only Standard for Home and Building Automation
KNX The worlds only Standard for Home and Building Automation IEC

2 KNX Building Automation KNX philosophy?
An installation bus offering cost-effective and flexible solutions. Suited for residential, commercial and industrial buildings KNX is the world´s only open Standard for the control in both commercial and residential buildings, defined by IEC14543. Controlled by the KNX association in Europe which ensures the technology is independent of all manufacturers. KNX devices from different manufacturers are checked for compliance with the standard, registered and certified by the KNX Association. Compliant devices will display the registered KNX Logo. Supported by more than 230 members of the KNX Association

At that time nobody could foresee their individual future. These three highly important homegrown European solutions for home and building control initially tried to develop their markets separately and tried to find their own places in European standardisation. Batibus did particularly well in France, Italy and Spain, whereas EIB enjoyed success in the German speaking and north European countries.  EHS was the preferred solution for manufacturers of white and brown goods. In 1997, the three consortia in charge of the above mentioned specifications decided to join forces to develop the market for intelligent homes with the agreed goal to develop a new, common industrial standard that could also be proposed as an international standard. The KNX specification was published by the newly set-up KNX Association in the spring of It is based on the EIB specification, supplemented with new configuration mechanisms and communication media originally developed by Batibus and EHS. 3

5 from an industry to an international standard
CENELEC In December 2003, the KNX protocol as well as the two media, TP (twisted pair) and PL (power-line) was approved by the European national committees and ratified by the CENELEC Bureau Technique as the EN European Standard. CEN As KNX increasingly provides specifications that are not only used for the automation of electrical installation equipment but also for HVAC applications, the KNX Association proposed its specifications to CEN for publication as a European standard for building automation control systems. CEN accepted the proposal and the KNX specifications were published by CEN as EN and EN ANSI/ASHRAE Also the coupling of KNX to other automation systems is internationally standardized: both the US ANSI/ASHRAE standard 135 as well as the ISO documents the mapping between KNX and BACnet. (Nord America) 5

6 from an industry to an international standard
ISO/IEC In view of the large interest in KNX compatible products outside European countries and its proven technology, the KNX association also initiated the necessary steps to have the KNX standard approved on an international level. Countries active in CENELEC proposed the European EN 50090 norm for standardisation by ISO/IEC at the end of In November 2006 the KNX protocol, including all transmission media (TP, PL, RF and IP) was approved for publication as the ISO/IEC x International Standard. This makes KNX the only worldwide open standard for home and building control. SAC The great interest in China for compatible KNX products and KNX technology was the main reason for the KNX Association to have the international ISO/IEC standard translated into Chinese. The Chinese standardisation committee, SAC TC 124 introduced the KNX standard in China and adopted it as standard GB/Z in July 2007. 6

7 KNX supports several communication media
Each communication medium can be used in combination with one or more configuration modes, allowing each installer to choose the right combination for the targeted market segment and application. Twisted pair (KNX TP): This communication medium, twisted pair, bit rate 9600 bits/s, has been taken over from EIB. The EIB and KNX TP1 certified TP1 products will operate and communicate with each other on the same bus line. Radio frequency (KNX RF): KNX devices supporting this communication medium use radio signals to transmit KNX telegrams. Telegrams are transmitted in the 868 MHz (Short Range Devices) frequency band, with a maximum radiated power of 25 mW and bitrate of kBit/sec. (Australia has 433Mhz) Power Line (KNX PL): PL110 Power line bit rate 1200 bits/s, has also been taken over from EIB. IP/Ethernet (KNX IP): As documented in the KNXnet/IP specifications, KNX telegrams can also be transmitted encapsulated in IP telegrams. In this way, LAN networks as well as Internet can be used to route or tunnel KNX telegrams. In this way, IP routers are an alternative to USB data interfaces respectively TP line or backbone couplers. In the latter case, the normal TP backbone is replaced by a fast Ethernet based line. 7

10 KNX logo is an Identifier
Through product certification, KNX guarantees the “Interoperability & Interworking” of products KNX is the only HBES standard running global certification schemes for products, training centers and even for installers. Product compliance is conducted by independent laboratories Different products from different manufacturers can be utilised for different applications 10

21 KNX is Green Research project, conducted at Bremen University of Applied Sciences (Germany), energy saving with KNX. Based on a four-year series of measurements, the use of KNX control was found to reduce energy consumption by an impressive 50%.

22 KNX is Green

23 Energy Efficient Solutions What does Energy Efficiency mean for us ?
Use energy only when really required  e.g. by means of presence detectors Use only that amount of energy that is actually needed  e.g. by constant light control Ensure energy is utilised with the highest possible efficiency factor  e.g. by using electronic ballasts Assist consumers to change their habits regarding the efficient use of energy

24 Why consider a KNX solution in a home ?
Increased comfort The right environment What you want When you want it Conserving energy Smart grid Increasing energy charges Generation capacity Stress on infrastructure
