3 Sydney Sailing School Reason for being in existence: Get more people sailing and on the water Who is the market? Existing sailors family and friends Ladies aged 25-50 - make the decisions for what the kids do! 20-30 year old ex-sailors

4 Current Challenges facing sailing in Australia Ageing Demographic of current sailors Average age that someone starts sailing is 20 years old About 15% of current membership is less than 20yrs old Majority over 60 yrs old Perceived as “exclusive, for older people, international and dangerous” Sailing has high fixed costs not covered by council rates! (note only 7% of people that left the sport said cost was the main factor)

5 Motivations for new people getting into sailing 70% of people want to sail socially or for relaxation 15% want competition (compared with 34% of sailing members) All details have been taken from the Gemba report and the YA Annual report and give a snap shot. Available on the YA website.

6 Overview of a similar sport: Skiing Step 1: learn to ski Step 2: skiing becomes annual event Step 3: purchase some equipment Step 4: maybe join a club Step 5: Maybe start competing Why do we expect new sailors to go from 1 - 5 in less than 6 months?

7 Sydney Sailing School focus: Address the needs of the market Sailing must be: Fun, social, low time commitment, inclusive, safe Convert sailing participation into club participation

8 We don’t want a bubble! We need an entry point for someone throughout the pathway Kids programs Adult programs - including universities Family programs

10 No Racing from Sydney Sailing School! Racing is provided by the club and classes apart from the team racing and adventure races as part of midweek pay to play Racing is something that they aspire to do Skiff sailing is awesome and people want to give it a go - we want people that are keen, motivated and able!

11 So what marketing are we going to do? Online: Website and SEO Facebook and Social Media Webinars and sailing videos Offline: Boatshow Referrals - We need your help - especially with schools Incentivised instructors T-shirts and merchandise

12 How can you help? Promote the Skiff Club website to friends and family Like our Facebook page - share stuff! Facebook.com/sydneysailingschool Keep us in the loop with regards school contacts and promotions in school magazines etc. Remember, we are the face of the sport - it costs a lot of time and money to get a new sailor - let’s make them feel welcome!
