2 2 RYDA Program  Road safety education program for youth  Aim to help reduce trauma on our roads  Best Practice Program – nationally reviewed  Available to all year 15 & 16 year olds

3 3 The Problem  Young drivers (aged 15–19) are: o7 times more likely to crash than older drivers (45-49) – females 6 times oat fault in 79 % of serious injury crashes in which they are involved oat fault in 83 % of fatal crashes in which they are involved

4 4 Community - Sharing the Burden  Program sustainability requires a sharing of the burden  Road safety is a responsibility we all share oCouncils, oGovernment agencies – Transport, Police, Education, Health/ACC oBusiness and philanthropic community oParents and our youth

7 7 RYDA in 2009  Programmes run in 2008/9 year in:  Far North  Whangarei  North Shore  Auckland  Manukau  Pukekohe  Rotorua  Christchurch  Nationally - 4500 students, 47 schools

8 2009 - 2010 In 2009/10 we delivered to over 70 schools and 7000 students in:  Far North  Whangarei  North Shore  Auckland  Manukau  Pukekohe  Rotorua  Christchurch  Nelson –Working with D9940 for 2010/11 launch 8

10 2010 - 2011 Expand the programme to include: Palmerston North Wellington Dunedin Invercargill Other centres as requested 10

11 The Future Eventually deliver to 80% of all Year 11 students Mid term goal: deliver to 20,000 students by 2012 2010/11 goal: deliver to 11,000 students 11

12 COSTS  Programme costs vary according to venue  Cost is about $35 per day per student  Students/schools asked to contribute and we discuss this with the school ($10)  Balance is raised locally – Council, Rotary, in kind, other  Rotary usually $500 to $1000, some more  BOC and NZ Steel sponsorship  No student should miss out 12

13 What can your Rotary Club do?  RYDA is a Rotary initiative – District Committee  Local knowledge and relationships  Volunteers on the day – usually 7  Some financial support – depending on club commitments and size of the club  No student should miss out for financial reasons 13

15 Where to now....? Rotary Club Agreement Club makes contact with school One liaison person at school identified RYDA makes all arrangements School books into programme on agreed date Club agrees a donation Six volunteers on the day Schools agrees a fee 15
