2 Warm-up 10/8/2013 On pg 32 of your journal… Write the POV of each of the following passages… 1. The two children stepped out. They squinted down the shadowy passage, searching for a door, a recess any place where someone could be hiding. Emma’s foot touched an empty jar and it rolled away filling the passage with a loud rumble. 2. Blood. Josh could taste it and smell it. He lay on his side, his left cheek pressed against the earth, the icy rain pinging on his face…He knew he could not stay where he was, but wasn’t at all sure he could stand, much less walk. 3. Say, Billy, I’ve quit the old business- a year ago. I’ve got a nice store. I’m making an honest living, and I’m going to marry the finest girl on earth two weeks from now. 4. Ben Price investigated the scenes of the robberies and immediately knew that Jimmy was the author of the robbery. Ben knew Jimmy worked. The clothes and manner of Jimmy. Annabel loved Jimmy and her father approved of him.

3 Warm-up 10/9/-13 On page 34 of your journal… Point out the verb in each sentence, then classify it as either linking, helping or an action verb. MAKE SURE YOU WRITE THE SENTENCES!!!!! 1. The man seemed like a smart person who just made a bad judgment call. 2. To my surprise, the truth appeared to me in a dream. 3. Mark is the fastest person on our team because he can run the mile in less than eight minutes. 4. Jim and I moved the furniture into our new house yesterday.

4 Warm-up 10/9/13 On page 36 of your journal… The following list of verbs can be used as a linking verb and as an action verb. Choose two of the following verbs and write two sentences for EACH of the verbs you have chosen. 1 st sentences: use the verb you have chosen as a linking verb 2 nd sentence: use the verb you have chosen as an action verb List of Verbs: Grow Feel Taste Prove Appear Remain Sound Turn

5 Warm-up 10/10/13 On pg 38 of your journal… Grab a Warriner’s textbook from the back counter and then turn to page 46. Write down the definition for a linking verb (it is in red writing) Then on pg 48, complete Review A by writing sentences 1- 5 then highlighting the linking verbs and underlining the action verbs.

6 Warm-up 10/10/13 On pg 40 of your journal… Grab a Warriner’s textbook from the back counter and then turn to page 46. Write down the definition for a linking verb (it is in red writing) Then turn to page 49 and complete Exercise 4 by doing EXACTLY what the directions say!!! You only need to complete 1-5 WRITE THE SENTENCES!!!!!

7 Warm-up 10/15/13 On page 42 of your journal… The title of our story this week is “The Scholarship Jacket” 1. Look on page 225 of the textbook to get your vocabulary for this week. Define all six words listed in the “word list” box. 2. Then in 1 sentence for EACH word, tell how you think the word is going to effect the story, based on the definitions you have found and the title of the story. Definitions can also be found on the white side margins of the story.

8 Warm-up 10/21/13 On page 44 of your journal…(46 FOR 2 ND BLK) While being very specific, tell what the climax of the fairytale you read? Be sure to include details of the scene. Then justify why that is the climax of the story. Your justification should read something like this… Example from “Seventh Grade”: I think the climax of the story “Seventh Grade” is when Teresa walks up to Victor for the first time because this is where the story turns in a positive way. Teresa has never walked up to Victor before; he has always been pursuing her. At the beginning of the year, he thought to himself, “Teresa is going to be my girl this year.” That shows he would be very active in trying to pursue her this year. So when Teresa finally purses Victor by asking him to tutor her that turns the conflict around which is what the climax does.

9 Warm-up 10/22/13 On page 46 of your journal… (48 FOR 2 ND BLK) 1. Using your “Stop and Notice and Note” notes on page 25, create a list of contrasts and contradictions that occur in your story. 2. Be sure to tell why that example is a contrast or a contradiction….. Remember “Thank You Ma’m” examples of contradictions

10 Warm-up 10/29/13 On page 52 of your journal… (54 for 2 nd Blk) Get a Warriner’s textbook and turn to pages 57- 58. Complete Exercise 9: Writing Adverbs Write the paragraph and then highlight the adverbs that you use to fill in the blanks.

11 Warm-up 10/30/13 On page 54 of your journal… 56 for 2 nd Blk) Turn to page 58 of the Warriner’s textbook and complete the following: 1. Copy the definition for Prepositions (in red) 2. Then copy the ENTIRE yellow textbook labeled Commonly Used Prepositions 3. Complete Exercise 10: 1-3 (write the sentence and be ready to explain how the sentence is different once you change the preposition)
