Analysing Scanning Insights Easy enough to amass scanning insights. No inherent value unless analysed. Pattern/theme = trend Analyse trends for implications Crowdsourced, collaborative analysis

Analysis Questions Which trends are directly relevant to our strategic question/decision/issue and why? What isn’t directly relevant now but could be relevant in the future? What are the implications for our strategy?

Analysis Questions What’s driving these trends? How are these trends connected? What are the likely implications for us into the future? – Opportunities, risks, challenges How much influence do you have to shape the evolution of these trends? – Appreciate, Influence, Control

Important!

Analysis on ST Site Insights Trends Trend Reports Privacy: my, our, all Summary: provides quick overview Tags: a way to cluster insights and trends Sharing: email, Twitter, Facebook Comment: ask questions/add to analysis

Analysis on ST Site You can use your private trends for analysis using the ‘my’ level of privacy. – follow up an idea, monitor over time. You can do analysis across your organisation using the ‘our’ level or privacy. – looking for organisational collaboration.

Analysis on ST site If you’re brave, you can dive into all the trends on the ST site, using the ‘all’ level of privacy. – Use for broad exploration of a topic to see what’s out there. – Tags are already clustered into keywords to help out.

Insights Individuals enter an individual insight, and add their interpretation of why it’s important. – Can cluster insights into a report on a topic. Analysis at this level focused on strengthening understanding of insight.

Let’s go to the site and check them out

Trends Clusters of like insights – pattern/theme. Need to be written up to be of real value. – Insights linked to a trend – provide evidence/cases to support trend relevance – Identifies what’s changing and why it matters – Starts to answer the ‘so what’ question Broad range of tools at this level.

Trend Reports Cluster of individual trends into like group – eg food security, chimeras Analysis of trends at this level identifies the critical ones in terms of implications for your organisation – Delphi – Morphological Analysis – Modelling

Forum For discussion around particular trends, implications etc. May not be popular with everyone, but allows discussion and collaboration across Australia/globally. Use if it suits (or if your IT allows!).

Let’s go to the site and check them out

Using the tools Choice is dependent on your context and desired outcomes. Basic aim is to deepen understanding about the insights and trends to inform decision making about strategic responses. Everyone will have their favourites, but be open to trying them all as relevant.
