3 Schlieffen Plan Before the start of the war Germany made the Schlieffen Plan to avoid a two-front war If a two-front war happened, Germany would have to fight –France - The Western Front –Russia - The Eastern Front

4 Schlieffen Plan Plan was to defeat France in 6 weeks Then transfer most of their forces to the east to defeat Russia This plan assumed Russia would take 6 weeks to get ready for war

5 Schlieffen Plan Alfred Von Schlieffen (the creator of the plan) assumed Britain would remain neutral, even if Germany went through neutral Belgium He was wrong!

6 Schlieffen Plan Belgium’s neutrality was gauranteed by Britain If a country tried to enter Belgium for war, Britain would take action to stop it As a result Britain declared war on Germany WW1 had begun

9 Schlieffen Plan Germany moved quickly to take over land within 35km of Paris Schlieffen Plan was too fast. The German troops were exhausted. Britain and France were able to push troops back to northern France
