6 6 Tasks: Monitors Safety Performance Indicators Determine compliance with targets and produce annual reports Determine the need for safety enhancement activities on a national level Performs Safety Oversights Oversight Manual Annual Oversight Plan Approves implementation of Major Changes Staffed by: Senior staff (Operational & Technical) Regulator background experienced in audits Training High level of training in Safety Management High level of training in Auditing

8 8 Tasks: Establish and maintain the Safety Management System fulfilling Regulatory Requirements Maintain the Occurrence Reporting Database Monitoring corrective actions Support during Safety Assessments Safety Audits and Inspections Assist in Safety Investigations Liaison with Safety Regulators Liaison with management of Safety Issues Changes Safety Promotion Staffed by: Senior staff (Broad operational and technical knowledge) Training High level of training in Safety Management High level of training in Auditing & Safety Assessment While the SM may be held accountable for any deficiencies in the safety management system itself, the SM should not be accountable for the safety performance of the organization.

10 10 Safety Organisation – Service Provider Tasks Act as a source of expertise and advice; Review the progress on identified hazards and actions taken following accidents and incidents; Make safety recommendations to address safety hazards; Review internal safety audit reports; Review and approve the audit response and the actions taken; Encourage lateral thinking about safety issues; Help identify hazards and defences; and Prepare and review safety reports to the Chief Executive Officer Staffing Members from key departments (ATS, Technical, Management, etc.) The safety committee is often chaired by a senior executive with the SM acting as Secretary.
