HOW GOD GAVE HIS LAW

Romans 2:14-15 14 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, 15 since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.)

How God Gave His Law 1. He wrote it in the heart of man (natural law).

Deuteronomy 10:4 4 The LORD wrote on these tablets what he had written before, the Ten Commandments he had proclaimed to you on the mountain, out of the fire, on the day of the assembly. And the LORD gave them to me.

Sinai can be divided into three parts: 1. Civil Law – how Israel should be governed 2. Ceremonial Law – how Israel should worship 3. Moral Law – how All should live

WHY GOD GAVE HIS LAW

Romans 3:20 20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.

James 2:10 10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.

Why God Gave His Law 1. To remind us of our sinfulness and our need for the Savior. We have “trespassed” or “transgressed” against God.

Exodus 20:2 2 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

John 14:15 15 "If you love me, you will obey what I command.

Why God Gave His Law 1. To remind us of our sinfulness and our need for the Savior. We have “trespassed” or “transgressed” against God. 2. To teach us how we can serve God in thankfulness after we have come to believe in Jesus and are free to serve him.

WHAT GOD’S LAW EMPHASIZES

Matthew 22:37-39 37 Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.‘ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'

What God’s Law Emphasizes 1.Commandments 1 – 3 say: Love God above all else 2.Commandments 4 – 10 say: Love your neighbor as yourself Romans 13:10 – Love is the fulfilling of the Law

How Believers in Jesus Feel About God’s Law 1. They don’t look upon obeying it as a heavy burden.

Romans 3:28 28 For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law.

How Believers in Jesus Feel About God’s Law 1. They don’t look upon obeying it as a heavy burden. 2. They know they can’t earn heaven by obeying it.

THE VALUE OF GOD’S LAW (HIS COMMANDMENTS)

Romans 3:20 20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.

The Value of God’s Law (His Commandments) 1. Obeying the Law does not help us to get … Redeemed – set free from sin, death, and the devil Justified – declared “Not Guilty” in God’s eyes Forgiven – pardoned

Titus 3:4-5 4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,

The Value of God’s Law (His Commandments) 1. Obeying the Law does not help us to get … Redeemed – set free from sin, death, and the devil Justified – declared “Not Guilty” in God’s eyes Forgiven – pardoned Saved – rescued, delivered, made safe Justification, redemption, forgiveness, salvation, heaven is only through JESUS.

The Value of God’s Law (His Commandments) 2. Obeying the Law is a part of our becoming …

Psalm 1 1 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. 4 Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. 6 For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

The Value of God’s Law (His Commandments) 2. Obeying the Law is a part of our becoming … More sanctified – set apart for a life of godly living

Psalm 19 Glory of God Revealed by Creation 1 The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. 2 Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. 3 There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. 4 Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun, 5 which is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. 6 It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is hidden from its heat.

Psalm 19 Glory of God Revealed in His Word 8 The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes. 9 The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The ordinances of the LORD are sure and altogether righteous. 10 They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. 11 By them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. 12 Who can discern his errors? Forgive my hidden faults. 13 Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then will I be blameless, innocent of great transgression. 14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

The Value of God’s Law (His Commandments) 2. Obeying the Law is a part of our becoming … More sanctified – set apart for a life of godly living More like Jesus while we are here on earth

Psalm 119:32 32 I run in the path of your commands, for you have set my heart free.

The Value of God’s Law (His Commandments) 2. Obeying the Law is a part of our becoming … More sanctified – set apart for a life of godly living More like Jesus while we are here on earth More happy and content in our own living
