4 What is alcohol? Alcohol is a drug created by a chemical reaction in some foods, especially fruits and grains. Alcohol is a depressant drug which slows down the activity of the brain and nervous system.

5 How Alcohol Affects Individuals Intoxicated- when a person feels the effects of drinking alcohol-also called being drunk

6 Blood alcohol concentration (BAC)- the amount of alcohol in the blood ex..10% means there is 1 part alcohol per 1000 parts blood

7 What Factors Determine a Person’s BAC? Size Gender Food in the stomach How fast a person drinks How much a person drinks Other substances in the body (ex. medication)

8 What is considered one drink?

9 The Law You must be 21 to drink alcohol in the United States You can be arrested for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) if your BAC is over.08 %

10 Long-term Effects of Alcohol Use Cirrhosis-scarring and destruction of liver tissue Ulcer-an open sore in the stomach lining. It is very painful. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome- a pattern of birth defects, learning, and behavioral problems affecting individuals whose mothers consumed alcohol during pregnancy.

11 Why Do Some Teens Use Alcohol? Curiosity They think it will make them popular Makes them feel grown-up Relief from confusing or painful emotions Peer pressure-drinking to fit in Binge drinking is popular among teens Binge drinking- consumption of several alcoholic drinks in a short period of time (May cause death)

12 Why is Alcohol Harmful to Teens? Teens are still growing and brains are still developing They may damage their nervous system Alcohol can affect emotions-alcohol may change how they feel for a short time but it can’t solve their problems It is illegal! Teen Alcohol Use (5 mins)

13 How Can You Avoid Alcohol? Avoid situations where alcohol use may take place If you find yourself in a situation use STOP S-Say no firmly. T-Tell why not. (Use “I” messages) O-Offer another idea. P- Promptly leave.

14 Alcohol in the Media Young people view approximately 20,000 commercials each year, of which nearly 2,000 are for beer and wine In 2000, brewers spent more than $770 million on television ads and $15 million more on radio

15 Alcohol is made to look fun and exciting in movies, tv shows and commercials People in commercials are young and attractive Advertisers don’t show any negative effects of alcohol use
