Accreditation forcing recognition of the need for gen. ed. Reform. CC – clear distinction between liberal arts and work force sides – necessary for student success – agreed upon Support Learning/Create Partnerships Faculty development in the area of the innovation. Used internal and external expertise Sent team to NC workshop – formed a cohesive group to steer project. Dialogues on campus – lunch sessions Threatening letters, fees – carrot vs. stick Teaching centers/newsletters

Model: base on outcomes, not courses – develop outcomes and assessment Cant start from a blank slate Review literature – next step to take that to department/school meetings –ask what the implications are – think about it where faculty live Defining the specifics brings out the turf issues – if the principles are in place it can keep the process moving Form small voluntary groups of gen ed faculty – ask what is common – an inductive approach.

10 Faculty and Administrators Working Together to Achieve Significant Curricular Reform Notes on Phase III How to negotiate the differences Provide alternatives to help get buy-in New groups want to change at EVERY meeting Dont take it to the Senate until you know it is going to pass. – Learning phase critical – and it takes time Think as a sales-person. Begin the conversation with the needs important to the customer – Find the common ground first (THIS SEEMS LIKE A THEME)
