Windows 8 Metro Screen

Windows 8 App’s & Programs Windows 8 can run traditional Programs to do complex tasks such as Microsoft Office but also introduces a new concept called “Apps” which stands for Applications. They are programs which are presented in a uncluttered view, but this makes it unintuitive to control. Eg closing, whereas in Windows 7 Programs you click on the obvious X at the top RHS. Apps are simple and perform one task that does not require much detail on the screen, hence can be presented on a Smart Phone or Tablet.

Metro Layout The most common Apps are on the left, some like Weather give enough information in just the Tile. RH click on free desktop will allow showing all Apps. Moving to the right top or bottom corner bring up the “Charms” Bar. It has restricted set of control features all slightly advanced. WiFi is useful. Bottom left forces back to the initial Start screen. If several Apps are running, clicking in the Top LH corner switches between each in turn. To close an App Drag from the middle top to the bottom.

Windows 7 & Vista after logon

Running Internet Explorer A good demonstration of the difference between an App & Program is Internet Explorer. The Metro version has the Internet address at the bottom, which if you click in shows Favourites (in UK Spelling) and frequently visited sites. It works well for tiny screens. If you want to do detailed its much easier to use the standard Programs version. Left click on Start, that’s on bottom left, then Internet Explorer. Most sites now ask if you want to accept Cookies? Click on “OK”.

Install Classic Shell? Gives back the “Start” button at bottom LHS, like Windows 7, Vista & XP had. Download from http://www.classicshell.net/ Press Download Now and Run then follow instruction. Get an assistant if help is needed.http://www.classicshell.net/ Or the program from my memory stick.

Internet or World Wide Web. The world is your Oyster now! If you want to know something somebody in the world is bound to know about it. Finding it without being sidetracked is the challenge. Today, just a few ideas. Type in - www.bbc.co.uk www.google.co.uk www.thetimes.co.uk http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page http://www.creweandnantwich-u3a.org.uk
