Cell Types & Tissues August 22, 2011

Objective Define cell, tissue and relate the structure of the following to their functions

Key Vocab Tissue Ciliated Cell Root Hair Cell Xylem Vessels Muscle Cells Red Blood Cells Organs Organ Systems

Cell Basic unit of structure and function of all living things Cell Theory All living things are made up of cells Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things All cells come from pre-existing cells

Tissue tissue is made up of a group of cells with similar structures, working together to perform a shared function Different tissues contain specialized cells to perform specific functions of that tissue

Ciliated Cells Commonly found in the respiratory tract Contain cilia, microscopic hair like projections on the surface of the cell that sweep fluids or particles away Function: movement

Ciliated Cells

Root Hair Cell cells found near to the tip of the roots of plants. Most water enters the root through them. The thin hair-like extension of each cell gives a large surface for water to enter across. Function: absorption

Root Hair Cell

Xylem Vessel xylem is a type of vascular tissue found in plants two major functions: – the conducting of water and mineral salt from root to leaves, –to provide mechanical strength (support) to the plant body. Function: conduction & support

Xylem Vessel

Muscle Cells skeletal muscle cells found in muscles attached to our skeleton voluntarily controlled function: contraction

Muscle Cells

Red Blood Cells Travel through your blood vessels delivering oxygen and removing wastes Appear red because they contain hemoglobin that binds oxygen for transport function: transport

Red Blood Cells

Organs An organ is a structure made up of a group of tissues, working together to perform specific functions

Organ Systems An organ system is a group of organs with related functions, working together to perform body functions
