2 THE FLAPPER Characteristics: – Felt hats – Bright colored dresses worn above the knee – High heels – Lots of jewelry – Short bobbed hair cuts, dyed hair black – Lots of make-up – New assertive attitude – Smoked, drank, cursed, very forward in public

3 WOMEN IN THE WORKPLACE  Despite all the noticeable changes, a double standard still existed  Post-WWI economy opens up new doors for women  Millions of new jobs opened, some were stereotypical women’s jobs(teaching, librarians, secretary, etc.)  New jobs included police officers, pilots, lawyers, bankers

4 WOMEN IN THE WORKPLACE  They were not being paid or treated as equals in the workplace  American family changes due to this as well  it was now seen as more of an equal partnership, by 1930 US divorce rate had doubled!  Married women are still expected to keep up the house and raise the kids while working
