Courtney McGough and Michael Campbell Engaging Students with Library Materials: How LMS Administrators, Faculty, and Librarians Can Collaborate for Better Learning Outcomes

Introductions Courtney McGough, GALILEO Michael Campbell, GeorgiaVIEW

Outline GALILEO-GeorgiaVIEW Collaboration Integrations – GeorgiaVIEW process – GALILEO and other library integrations Getting library resources into courses Collaborations

GALILEO-GeorgiaVIEW Collaboration Facilitate inclusion of library and learning resources in online courses Promote student use of library resources by reducing barriers Supports the Affordable Learning Georgia initiative

GeorgiaVIEW Integrations Process

 Partnership with Campuses  Maintain Vendor Contacts  D2L System Integrity  Community

Production January 2013 3Applications Integrated Production October 2014 58Applications Production April 2015 60 Applications

Interwoven (Deep) Integration Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) Remote Plugins (LTI 2.0) Valence – requires programming skill

LTI Warnings Don’t install LTI if:  Integration requires one LTI configuration per course or assignment  Instructors must install their own LTI links

Steps to Integrate for Instructors  Contact your Campuses LMS Administrator  Avoid vendors contacting Administrators Who is my D2L Brightspace Administrator  http://tinyurl.com/usgd2ladmin http://tinyurl.com/usgd2ladmin

Steps for Administrators  Open ticket with ITS Helpdesk  GeorgiaVIEW will help set up or obtain vendor support  Test in DEV first

Steps for Admins (continued)  Campus approves of application in DEV  If new, tool is reviewed by GeorgiaVIEW  How this may affect other orgs on the same server  Any security concerns  Upon approval, request is given ok for PROD  Campus approves of setup in PROD  ITS Ticket is closed

How much time does an integration take? Anywhere between 2 weeks to 3 months Rule of Thumb Notify Admins 1 to 3 months before an integration is needed.

Remind Campus Departments to work with LMS Administrator for any third party discussion and implementation ITS Helpdesk requests from campus will be rerouted to engage LMS Administrator Open separate ticket for each integration needed

Integrations

GALILEO Integrations Previously… – GALILEO password-embedded link http://www.galileo.usg.edu/express?instcode=xxxx&password= [your current password] – But, someone had to update the password each time it changed

GALILEO Integrations Now… GALILEO Auto-Authentication Widget GALILEO Search Box Soon… Films on Demand And others…

GALILEO Auto-Authentication Widget With this integration, when users log in to GeorgiaVIEW, they are automatically logged in to GALILEO Contact your primary campus administrator

GALILEO Search Box Widget A Discover GALILEO search box can be added to a course page or to the main landing page Contact your primary campus administrator

Films on Demand Allows faculty to insert a Films on Demand video into their course using the Insert Stuff button

Getting Library Resources into Courses

Tips for Linking to Library Resources Why linking? Linking to – Articles – Searches – Journals

Link to Articles Use the persistent link in the article’s citation information – Permalink in EBSCO databases (e.g., Academic Search Complete) or in discovery searches Academic Search Complete – Document URL in ProQuest (e.g., Research Library) Research Library – Document link in LexisNexis AcademicLexisNexis Academic

Find Articles

Link to Articles: EBSCO and Discover GALILEO

Link to Articles: ProQuest

Link to Articles: LexisNexis Academic

Link to Searches

Tip: Search Alerts Click the Email Alert link to be notified by email when a new article matching your search has been added

Link to Journals Two ways: – Journals A-Z – use the Capture Citation or URL on SFX/Find It menu Journals A-Z – Publication record in an EBSCO database

Link to Journals Through Journals A-Z, use the Capture Citation or URL link at the bottom of the SFX/Find It menuJournals A-Z

Link to Journals Publication record in EBSCO databases

Link to Journals

Tip: Journal Alerts Click the Email Alert link to be notified by email when a new issue of the journal has been added

Ask a Librarian

Collaborations

Georgia State University Library and Columbus State University Librarians can: Provide correct (persistent) links to articles/journals Create guides for library resources specific to a class and add them in your course Provide orientation/instruction sessions using Collaborate in D2L Develop tutorials for a particular class Offer individual research consultations within D2L Work with faculty to develop assignments that build research skills

Collaborations University of West Georgia Librarians can: – Assist with putting items on reserve – Add reserve items into D2L

Collaborations Georgia Highlands College Library Librarians can: Create brief course- or assignment-specific tutorials Offer research instruction sessions online Virtual office hours

Collaborations Georgia Highlands College Library Librarians can: Compile a course-specific resource list and include in D2L

Collaborations Georgia Highlands College Library Librarians can: Add a chat widget in the course for students questions

Collaborations Georgia Highlands College Library Librarians can: Set up and monitor discussion boards for library-related questions from students

Collaborations Georgia Highlands College Library Adding a librarian as an Instructor in your course will allow them to add content to the course

Ask a Librarian

Questions

How do you find educational materials for your classes? How do you get them into your courses? 52

Do you have an example of a librarian, faculty member, instructional designer, and/or campus admin working together to get library materials into their course?

Does your institution use one of these integrations? What has been your experience with it?

In conclusion…

Take-Away Points Add the GALILEO integration (if you haven’t already) – talk to your campus D2L admin Talk with your library about the services they offer to faculty and students
