Zee Mikrosköp No…It’s Not Real German.

The Microscope  Microscopes use a variety of lenses to magnify very small objects so we can see the details of their structures. This makes them great for cell studies.  The bulk of this presentation will “focus” on the compound light microscope.  See what I did…”focus”…get it?...wicked!

The Compound Light Microscope  A compound light microscope uses a focused light beam and lenses to form a magnified image of the specimen.

The Compound Light Microscope  Ocular Lens  Tube  Revolving Nosepiece  Objective Lenses  Stage  Stage Clips  Arm  Diaphragm  Condenser Lens  Base  Coarse Adjustment  Fine Adjustment  Lamp

Picture Perfect  There are several factors that must be considered when trying to find an image using the microscope. Magnification Magnification The number of times larger the image is compared to the specimen. The number of times larger the image is compared to the specimen. Multiply the power of the lenses to find this.Multiply the power of the lenses to find this. Resolution Resolution The ability to distinguish between two or more objects. The ability to distinguish between two or more objects. Contrast Contrast Using a background of a different colour to separate image and background.Using a background of a different colour to separate image and background. A stain is often used for this.A stain is often used for this.

Electron Microscopes  Electron microscopes use a beam of electrons, instead of light, to relay information about the specimen.  They magnify anywhere from 300,000x to 1,500,000x.  Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM)  Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)  New technology has led to the development of the Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) and the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) which allow scientists to see molecules within a cell!

Can Transformers Be Geeks? Umm…Yeah… The Earth is in extreme danger…You grab a pencil, pretend it’s a sword.
