In the early 20 th century, European powers took over the lands of the Middle East that had once been ruled by the mighty (and mostly peaceful) Ottoman Empire. Europeans believed, like many Americans today, that they could do a better job of organizing the Middle East than the Ottomans had. They set about a plan of Nation Building to create new nations out of the religious and ethnic groups in the area. You will do the same thing.

How was the Ottoman Empire able to rule this region peacefully?

Use the demographic data and the map to redraw the middle east into stable countries. You need 6 countries and you can name them. Each Country Needs: - a city - access to water (rivers, oceans or seas) - access to crop land or grassland - one religion - one ethnicity Try to make countries that have as many as these as possible. Then explain why you made the choices you did.

Map questions… What problems did you face in trying to make these maps? Does this help explain to you some of the things going on in the Middle East today? How did the Ottoman Empire manage to control the same area with relatively little conflict?

Please get a Middle East Map Pg. 72A/B This is a map of the modern Middle East. It represents the very work Europeans did at the same task you were just trying. How closely does it resemble your attempts? Use your atlas and the internet to answer these questions. Due Friday.

Chapter 18, Sec. 4 is on the creation of the Nation of Israel. This is one of the countries (like Lebanon and Syria) that Europeans created out of the territories in the Middle East they claimed during Imperialism. However, the creation of Israel caused a huge conflict in the Middle East for many complex reasons that we will try to untangle next week. This conflict is so intense, it is still going on today even though many countries have tried to get involved to solve it. It is known as the Arab/Israeli Conflict or the Palestinian Apartheid depending on who you talk to. Those names alone show how charged this issue is.
