1 1. Why do many metal cooking utensils have wooden handles? 2. Why is nuclear energy a nonrenewable resource? 3. Describe the energy conversions that take place in a pendulum, and explain how energy is conserved (not lost or disappeared)? 4. Describe the energy conversions that take place in a roller coaster? 5. What type of energy conversion is used in a hair dryer? Wood in not a good conductor of heat. It is an insulator. Because it can not be re-used for a long period of time. It also produces waste that can not be recycled. As the pendulum swings downward, PE converts to KE. Some of the energy is converted into TE because of friction. As the roller coaster rolls down the track, PE is converted into KE. Some of the energy is converted into TE because of friction. Some of the energy is converted into sound energy. Electrical energy to light energy to sound energy to thermal energy.

2 6. You drop a ball and it bounces. Which ball will be the highest- the first or the last and why? 7. That same ball slows down and eventually stops. Is the energy that was in the ball lost forever? Why or why not? The first bounce would be the highest because it would have the most energy. After the first bounce, energy is transferred into thermal energy and sound energy. No. Energy is never lost. Energy is always conserved (Law of Conservation of Energy) The energy is just transferred into other forms of energy such as thermal energy and sound energy.

3 8. What happens when you put a juice bottle in a cooler full of ice in terms of temperature? What is this an example of? 9. Where does the sun get its energy to light and heat the Earth? 10. Name two disadvantages of using nonrenewable energy resources. 11. Explain how the energy from fire wood actually comes from the sun. The juice and the melted ice would become the same temperature. This is Thermal Equilibrium. Nuclear Fusion. Can cause pollution, smog, acid rain. Can effect the Earth’s crust. Trees absorb the sun’s light and converts it into chemical energy. When we burn the wood, we release the energy that was stored.
