3 How did tobacco use begin? Native Americans used tobacco for medical and ceremonial purposes. European settlers saw tobacco as a way to make money and trade. Jamestown had the first successful American export company in America in 1612 headed by John Rolfe.

4 Nicotine Nicotine is the chemical in tobacco that is extremely addictive. Nicotine is produced by the plant as an insecticide to help protect its leaves. In its pure liquid form, nicotine is extremely poisonous.

5 Types of tobacco Smoking products 1. Cigarettes 2. Cigars 3. Pipes 4. Bidis- India. Cigarette like product that consists of tobacco wrapped in a leaf and ties with a string. 5. Kreteks- Indonesian. Contains ground clove which changes the cigarette’s flavor and numbs the lungs.

6 Smokeless tobacco 1. Chewing tobacco/Dip- Low grade tobacco that is mixed with flavoring and added chemicals. Wads of chewing tobacco are placed between the cheek and gum. 2.. Snuff- Finely ground powder tobacco. Oil may be added to add moisture. Placed between the gum and cheek or sniffed.

7 How can cigarettes effect the body? Group 1- Read pages 406-407. Prepare a presentation of that section. Describe the short term effects of nicotine, nicotine addiction, psychological dependence, and nicotine withdraw. Group 2- Please read pages 408-409. Describe tar and carbon monoxide. Explain carcinogens, and the chemicals in smokeless tobacco. Also, explain the side effects to these chemicals.

8 How can cigarettes effect the body? Cont. Group 3- Please read pages 410-413. Describe long- term risks for tobacco use, respiratory diseases, COPD, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, treatments for these conditions and cardiovascular diseases. (stop at Cancer) Group 4- Please read pages 413- 416. Explain the different types of cancer and explain the different types of second hand smoke. Explain how to avoid second hand smoke and how smoking can effect pregnancy.

9 What can influence a person to use tobacco? Friends: Peer Pressure. Fit in with the group. If friends do not use tobacco a person is also less likely to use it. Family: Parents can educate children, become role models for their children, and give advice to help children avoid tobacco use. Media: Anti-tobacco ads can help influence children. On the flip side, tobacco ads can influence children to use tobacco.

10 Skits Within your group, I would like you to come up with two skits. 1 st skit: Come up with a situation where friends negatively influence a person to use tobacco and how that person gets out of that situation. 2 nd skit: Come up with a situation where friends positively effect a persons decision in using tobacco.
