3 Tobacco Facts In the United States, cigarette smoking is responsible for about one in five deaths annually, or about 438,000 deaths per year Secondhand smoke causes 3,000 lung cancer and 35,000 heart disease deaths each year. Twenty-three percent of high school students in the United States are current cigarette smokers—23% of females and 22.9% of males. Babies have a higher chance of SIDS when mothers smoke during pregnancy

4 An estimated, 20.8% of all adults (45.3 million people) smoke cigarettes in the United States. Cigarette smoking estimates by age are as follows: 18–24 years (23.9%), 25–44 years (23.5%), 45–64 years (21.8%), and 65 years or older (10.2%).
