3. What are the First 3 Weeks of School about? Set expectations Decide rules and routines with pupils Develop independence in classroom and around school Get to know pupils well, assessing learning needs, social skills, friendships Working hard on learning in school Our focus is Matilda which links to R&R Schools

4. We are working towards becoming a ‘Rights Respecting School’ where pupils understand the UNICEF convention of the Rights of the Child and this becomes central to the ethos of our school. We hope this improves the behaviour of our pupils, especially in the playground develops a strong ethos of respect and responsibility between everyone in school further develops our anti-bullying and discrimination work Gives us a common language across school and cluster schools to support good behaviour Each class has developed its own charter

5. We continue to: Follow the guidance outcomes and experiences as outlines in CfE Develop Learning and Assessment Files in line with Assessment is for Learning Teach reading in a variety of contexts across the curriculum and use Accelerated Reader programme where appropriate to further develop individual reading progress Continue with our transition programme, focusing on the transition between John Muir Campus and Lochend Campus

6. Accelerated Reader All children using A.R will take a STAR Reader test by Friday 6 th September Children will be given a reading range, e.g. 2.4 – 4.3 All children at the start of the session take two or three books at the lower end of their range to get used to using A.R again Teachers review the reading range on a regular basis and monitor the books children are choosing White1.0 to 1.9 Orange2.0 to 2.9 Yellow3.0 to 3.9 Blue4.0 to 4.9 Red5.0 to 5.9 Green6.0 to 6.9 Purple7.0 to 7.9 Silver8.0 to 8.9 Gold9.0 to 9.9

7. Our two campus school-Buddies Our class buddies are in P6 Our buddy classes will have met or will meet up at both campuses throughout the year. We will be involved with – sharing learning, working together on maths or writing, attending some assemblies together.

8. Teacher Expectations Homework: Topic each term Reading will be heard on a regular basis. Spelling will be given on a Monday, jotters returned and children tested on Friday. Maths will be given out on a monthly basis linked to ‘Together we count’. Cursive Handwriting at all times. Uniform must be worn Indoor and outdoor PE kits must be in school at all times. Library visits once a week – volunteers needed!

9. Example of topic homework Task : Make a piece of plaid. You can use any materials you like. You can draw or weave. A plaid or full plaid is a pleated cloth worn with the modern kilt, made from the same tartan and worn cast over the shoulder. Learning Intention: I am learning about the clothes worn by the Celts. Success Criteria: I can draw or make a plaid design. I can use at least two colours. My plaid is no bigger than 10cm by 10cm.

11. Information Water bottles -All children MUST bring a full water bottle with a sports lid to school. Lunch money MUST be sent in a purse/wallet. All clothes & lunch boxes etc. must be named If children are late to school they MUST go to sign in at reception. Walking home Any children walking home independently from school MUST provide the school with written permission. Lining up In P3 we are expecting children to come round the back of school independently and line up. School security Parents visiting the school should report to the School Office at all times. Also to avoid accidents, please supervise younger siblings at all times in the playground.

Topics in P3 Matilda Rights & Respecting Schools Celts – History focus Late November-December P3 perform ‘The Christmas Nativity’ Scotland -Geography focus Health & Well Being self-esteem, hygiene, healthy eating and sex education-The difference between boys and girls and how children grow. Castles –Technology focus

13. Support in Class Individuals will be supported by Mrs King Mrs Clark will also support a phonics group and a handwriting group Mrs Brading will support group learning in reading and mathematics in each class

14. How will we assess Learning Teachers will use a variety of strategies to assess learning, examples include: Observation of pupils work. Observations of how they work. Summative assessment – end of topic check-ups, spelling tests, PIPS in P3, Single word spelling tests-2 times per year and Accelerated reader Star Reader-Tests 3 times per year* Formative assessment – writing criteria- self marking Peer and self-assessment of talks or presentations Evaluation of a final product e.g. model, report or poster Progress in developing skills Teachers in year group will work across stages and levels to moderate pupils work

17. Facts to promote Home/School Partnership Schools have pupils for 20% of their learning opportunities. Parents and school working together to support children has the most beneficial effect. Please come and discuss concerns or worries early. Any parents with subject/craft expertise willing to volunteer please let us know!

18. When parents become actively involved in home reading their children’s reading scores improve, on average, by between 12 and 18 months

19. Doing homework regularly throughout their time at school has roughly the same benefit as an extra year’s schooling.

20. Adults are vital…… ‘the encouragement and active interest of parents/carers are probably the most important ingredients in a child’s school life’ ‘when schools and families work together, children do better.’
