Mission: Over a length of about 8 weeks, collect food around our surrounding neighborhoods to donate to the local Salvation Army.

Donation Day at the Salvation Army Alyssa, Mia, and Brittany

The community needs OUR help! The Chelan County consists of about 7 surrounding country towns sitting in Eastern Washington. The 2010 U.S Census Bureau estimated a total 72,000 people residing within these subsidies. http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/53/53007.html According to the Wenatchee World Newspaper, an estimated 33,000 people visited local food banks at least once. http://www.wenatcheeworld.com/news/2007/nov/22/neighbors-care-fund-thousands-of-hungry-people/

Honorably Choosing Our Project  Without any current information about 2011 or 2012, my group concluded that the population has significantly risen as well as the demand for local food banks.  With carful consideration, time, and lots of brainstorming our group choose to collect food for those in need around our community.

 Initially our group met and began brainstorming ideas of projects that could benefit our community.  Once we all agreed upon collecting food, the following meetings were based on discussing HOW?  Through collaboration and synergy, we concluded a few ways to get out into the community and start collecting.  The following meetings we discussed the progress of our food collection and started planning our final project!

Process of Completion  Make flyers and put them on neighbor’s doorsteps indicating that we are college students and would appriciate any food donations for the local Salvation Army with a date and time listed for pick-up  Contact Safeway and Fred Myer to see if we could set up a table outside the grocery store for food collection.

Example of flyer FOOD DRIVE!! As part of a Small Group Communications Class we have chosen to collect food items for the Salvation Army to help the people in need around the Wenatchee Valley. We’re asking for any size donation of canned/non-perishable food items to donate to the Salvation Army. If you would like to donate please leave your items on your front porch, Friday the 4th or contact me via email at Daisyco12@gmail.com and we will be more than happy to come collect. Your donations will be greatly appreciated!! Daisyco12@gmail.com

Minor Bumps in the road SafewayFred Myer When we contacted our local Safeway we informed them that we would like to sit outside their grocery store and collect food. Given them all the details, they gave us a district number to reach someone in charge of allowing doorway activities. Needless to say we never received a call back with the go-ahead; that plan was squashed. Around May 7 th we went to the local Fred Myer to check about their doorway activity policy. We were informed we needed to fill out a packed that included an organization name and tax ID number that was not applicable. Also the application process took about 4-6 weeks which reached outside of our final due date.

As a group we decided to do two more food collections around our community neighborhoods Food collection 3

Success!  We concluded that we collect about $300.00-$350.00 worth of canned/non- perishable food to donate!  When dropping the food off at the Salvation Army a homeless lady helped us unload the food and gave us all a “Thank You” for the kind hearted donation. She was so thankful; as a group it has felt good to know we have helped our community and those in need.
