Look closer… 1 in 8 people go hungry 1.44 billion people live on less than 80p a day 1.44 billion people live on less than 80p a day

Look closer… “Like Slavery and Apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made.” - Nelson Mandela (1918 – 2013)

People are kept hungry and poor by unfair rules, practices and behaviours that only benefit the few.

Look closer… It’s uncomfortable to think about, but our lifestyle choices - like what we eat and what we use - can actually power these unfair practices around the world.

Look closer… Making changes to our lifestyles - by living more simply - means we can shift the balance back in favour of one human family. “Live simply, so others may simply live” - St Elizabeth Ann Seton

at how much meat you eat at how much energy you use at how much you waste …living simply Look closer…

at how much meat you eat … at how much meat you eat Around the world vital resources, like land and water, are being used up to cater for our growing appetite for meat. For Criseria (pictured) this means that her community are being forced off their land to make way for cattle-farming. ACTION - Eat less meat Give meat free Mondays and Fridays a go. “They don’t want the territory to grow crops, they want it for cattle and that’s a big problem.” - Criseria, Colombia

at how much energy you use Look closer… … at how much energy you use The world’s richest 20% of people (that’s us!) use 80% of the world’s resources, including energy. The strain on the planet caused by us consuming beyond our limits is contributing to climate change, with the world’s most vulnerable people, suffering from the consequences through flooding and droughts. ACTION - Reduce your energy footprint ACTION - Reduce your energy footprint. ‘Power down’ one night a week, avoid using electricity – so no TV, no computer etc. “The climate here is getting hotter and there is more drought and the seeds we plant get lost.” - Jairo, Nicaragua

… at what you throw away Look closer… … at what you throw away Our wasteful lifestyles are placing a heavy burden on the planet. In Scotland we throw away 556,000 tonnes of food every year. Yet 1 in 8 people in the world go hungry each day. We need to re-discover a healthy respect and value for our food. ACTION - Plan what you eat Only buy what food you need and will use. Don’t throw food away, unless its for composting. at what you throw away “Throwing away food is like stealing from the table of the poor and the hungry.” - Pope Francis

Food for thought: 40% of all cereals produced worldwide go to feed livestock – that’s enough to provide food for nearly 3.5 billion people. Each person in the UK (on average) produces 12.5 tons of carbon emissions compared with just 0.1 tons of emissions per person in Africa. The average UK family throws out £700 worth of food each year. Discussion: What message(s) do you take from the poster on the right? What influences your own shopping habits? What different ideas do you have for how to live “more simply” and in solidarity with our neighbours?
