Homework for Monday 19 th August 1.What does the Latin word revelare mean? 2. Describe ‘general’ revelation. 3. Describe ‘special’ revelation. 4. What is the literal meaning of ‘incarnation’?

Revelation- literal and liberal approaches to the bible Higher RMPS Belief and Science

Learning Intentions... I can describe the difference between the viewpoints of ‘ biblical literalists’ and ‘biblical liberals’ (symbolic view). I can explain in what ways Christians regard the bible as the ‘word of God’.

Biblical Literalist (or fundamentalist) Viewpoint KEY BELIEFS: What is written in the Bible is literally God’s word. Eg In the book of Jonah 1:17, when he was swallowed by a big fish, that is literally what happened.

Biblical liberal (symbolic) viewpoint. KEY BELIEFS: The bible contains the message that God wants to give about Christian salvation. (metaphorical) However when it was written, it was in the context of its time and it would be written differently in the 21 st century. The Bible therefore, points to truths but is not to be taken as literally true.

Task: 3-3-2 In table groups, on the paper provided take 4 minutes for discussion, then 2 minutes to write notes- 3 points to support a Biblical literalist stance 3 points to support a biblical liberal (symbolic) stance. 2 OT examples to discuss as a class. (Bibles available)

A problem for the Biblical literalists… If the bible is literally true, explain this.. Ex 3:1 Moses’ father in law is called ‘Jethro.’ Ex 2:18 Moses’ father in law is called ‘Ruell.’ Judges 1:16 Moses’ father in law is called ‘Hobab. ’

Problems for the Biblical liberals Interpretation… this approach leaves itself open to the challenge that if the Bible is to be understood to be just ‘representative’ of God’s word, it is easy to make it mean anything the reader wants.

FAST FACT… Take 5 minutes, and write an explanation in your jotter of how Christians believe the Bible to be the word of God. Remember literal and liberal, and include them both.

15 minute jogger… In 4 groups, create a coloured A4 sheet to go on the wall, and which will act as a ‘memory jogger’ to help you remember the headline facts of ‘Revelation’. Two groups to do Special, two groups to do General.

I Can… … describe the difference between the viewpoints of ‘literalists’ and ‘biblical liberals’ (symbolic view). … explain in what ways Christians regard the bible as the ‘word of God’
