Before We go any further… Science is NOT a Subject!Science is NOT a Subject! Science is a WAY of Thinking!Science is a WAY of Thinking! You are ALL Scientists! You are ALL Scientists!

Step 1: State the Problem The Big QuestionThe Big Question The “W” QuestionsThe “W” Questions Who, What, Where, When, Why… or HowWho, What, Where, When, Why… or How Problem: I get tired everyday at 1 o’clockProblem: I get tired everyday at 1 o’clock What kind of beverage will give me enough energy to last through the day? What kind of beverage will give me enough energy to last through the day?

Step 2: Gather Info on Problem ResearchResearch Make ObservationsMake Observations Went Online To Study CaffeineWent Online To Study Caffeine Went to Wal-Mart to study caffeine % in different energy drinks and sodasWent to Wal-Mart to study caffeine % in different energy drinks and sodas Wrote notes on my feelings & alertedness at 1 o’clockWrote notes on my feelings & alertedness at 1 o’clock

Step 3: State the Hypothesis NOTTTTT an Education GuessNOTTTTT an Education Guess A reasonable and educated possible answer based on what you already know and have observedA reasonable and educated possible answer based on what you already know and have observed “If I Do This, Then What Will Happen”“If I Do This, Then What Will Happen” My Hypothesis: If I Drink 1 Mountain Dew at Noon it will give me enough energy to last through the dayMy Hypothesis: If I Drink 1 Mountain Dew at Noon it will give me enough energy to last through the day

Step 4: Test the Hypothesis Perform ExperimentsPerform Experiments Must be designed to only test one thing- the hypothesisMust be designed to only test one thing- the hypothesis Must be able to repeat experiment over and over again to ensure accuracyMust be able to repeat experiment over and over again to ensure accuracy Drink 1 Mountain Dew at various times during the day, everyday for a two weeksDrink 1 Mountain Dew at various times during the day, everyday for a two weeks

Variables Definition: parts of the experiment that can be changed.Definition: parts of the experiment that can be changed. There are 3 Kinds of VariablesThere are 3 Kinds of Variables 1.) Independent- Changed in the experiment1.) Independent- Changed in the experiment 2.) Dependent- Changes as a result of a change in the independent variable2.) Dependent- Changes as a result of a change in the independent variable 3.) Controlled- AKA Constant- remains the same during the experiment so it does not affect the results3.) Controlled- AKA Constant- remains the same during the experiment so it does not affect the results

Step 5: Record and Analyze Data Data is RecordedData is Recorded Observations MadeObservations Made Measurements TakenMeasurements Taken Data should be organizedData should be organized Use Charts, Graphs, Drawings, TablesUse Charts, Graphs, Drawings, Tables Tired by 6 if drank a dew at 1 o’clockTired by 6 if drank a dew at 1 o’clock Tired by 7 if drank a dew at 2 o’clockTired by 7 if drank a dew at 2 o’clock By 2 nd week energy levels had increasedBy 2 nd week energy levels had increased

What did we learn? When writing a procedure we must be very specific. When writing a procedure we must be very specific. List things step by step. List things step by step. The best way to know what to do is do it and write down the steps. The best way to know what to do is do it and write down the steps.

Homework Problem Problem –I am thirsty. Research Research –What are you going to drink Hypothesis Hypothesis –If I ________, then _________ Experiment Experiment –List materials –Step by Step process Results Results –What happened Conclusion Conclusion –Restate hypothesis tell me what happened List your variables. List your variables. –Independent –Dependent –Constant

Science 8/19/09 Bell-work Please place homework on table. Answer the following question. What things do we use to make observations? 9AM Lock down practice.

Observations To make and observation we use our senses. To make and observation we use our senses. –We look at things –We listen to things –We smell things –We touch things –We taste things

Observations Observations help us understand what is going on around us. Observations help us understand what is going on around us. Think about ice cream Think about ice cream –What does a scoop of ice cream look like –What does it smell like –What does it taste like –How does it feel like –Can you hear ice cream?

Purpose The reason for doing the procedure The purpose of this experiment is to determine if soap added to tap water will change the surface tension of the tap water. The purpose of this experiment is to determine if soap added to tap water will change the surface tension of the tap water.

Hypothesis : Your own opinion as to what the outcome of the experiment will be as well as why you think that. If I add soap to tap water then the surface tension of the tap water will decrease. This will happen because the soap will interfere with waters ability to join together and that will decrease the surface tension. 31 Materials : List all the materials Dixie cup Dixie cup Pipette Pipette Tap water Tap water Dawn dish washing liquid Dawn dish washing liquid Penny Penny Paper towels Paper towels

Procedure : This should be written in such a matter that someone else who is not familiar with the activity could follow the directions and get the same results.

Procedure 1. Place penny on paper towel 2. Fill the pipette with tap water from the Dixie cup 3. Hold the pipette straight up and down 4. Slowly squeeze the pipette and allow one drop of water to fall on the penny 5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until the water on the penny falls onto the paper towel 6. Be sure to count your drops and record your total drops for each trail in data table 7. Dry off the penny and repeat steps 2 thru. 6 until you have completed 5 trials. 8. Average your results. 9. Repeat steps 1 thru 8 using tap water mixed with dawn dishing washing soap.

Data: Any quantitative or qualitative data will be included here. This includes charts and graph or personal observations if needed. Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3 Trial 4 Trial 5 Average TapWater SoapyWater

Conclusion: This is a complete analysis of your data. It is only a description of what happened. You should use as much research as possible in this section. Your hypothesis should also be referenced in this section. Any possible extensions to make the experiment better should be included here:

According to the data the water containing the soap took less drops to fall off the penny. The average number of tap water drops was________. The average number of soapy water drops was ________. Supporting the hypothesis that the soapy water would cause the waters surface tension to decrease. Another experiment that I could perform would be using sugar water and see if it effects the surface tension of water.
