Radical Reformers… Anabaptists-abolish private property and new ideas on baptism. Separation of church and state Today=Baptists, Quakers, Amish

English Reformation 1520’s some English clergy were toying with Protestant ideas. Breaking away from the Catholic church was the idea of King Henry VIII(for political reasons..end Pope’s control) At first, he denounced Luther and his practice, and the pope awarded him the title “Defender of the Faith.” Henry married Catherine of Aragon, had 1 daughter- Mary of Tudor.(Male heir?) Henry asked Pope to annul, or cancel, his marriage. Pope did not want to offend Holy Roman Emperor Charles, nephew of Catherine.

Break from Rome As a result, Henry leaned towards Protestant teachings and takes over the English church Catholics refused to accept and were executed for treason. Marriage is annulled and he maries Anne Boleyn. They have Elizabeth I. Henry would marry 4 more times-only one son-Edward.

Church of England Henry took over much of the land, granting some of the confiscated land to nobility to secure support for the Anglican church, the new church of England. More religious turmoil, Henry dies, Edward VI, age 10, inherited the throne. Henry’s advisors were Protestant, and under Edward, Parliament passed new laws which brought the Protestant reforms to England Mary of Tudor(daughter of Catherine) queen of England(1/2 sister) Reign of “Bloody Mary” on Protestants…

Elizabethan Settlement Mary dies, throne is passed to Elizabeth, slowly enforced a series of reforms, that later became known as the Elizabethan Settlement. A compromise, or acceptable middle ground between the Protestant and the Catholics, is found. English replaces Latin in Church; Monarch=head of church in England. She made England firmly Protestant nation, however. Promoted English arts

Catholic Reforms Council of Trent, Pope Paul III, was the leader of the Catholic Reform, to end corruption within the papacy and roll back the Protestant tide. Bible was NOT the only source for good faith and deeds. Formed in 1545 the pope formed “The Council of Trent,” to reaffirm traditional Catholic views. 1 The Inquisition- church court set up during the middle ages.

Reforms cont… Jesuits are formed to combat heresy and spread the Catholic faith. Experience renewed feelings of intense faith. These reforms slowed Protestant tide, but Europe remained divided into a Catholic south and Protestant north.

Wide Spread Persecution Heightened religious passion, persecution was wide spread. Both the Catholic and Protestants persecuted radicals sects like the Anabaptist. Tens of thousands of women and men died as victims of witch hunts between 1450-1750. People looked for scapegoats or whom they can blame their problems on. Hard times were thrown on the Jews, Venice ordered Jews to live in a separate quarter of town known as a ghetto. Yellow badges if travel!

Finally…drop in exit slip box. Discuss the long and short term causes and effects of the Protestant Reformation.
