Biotechnology Department Salt Lake Community College

The Salt Lake Community College Biotechnology Program Initiated in August 2001 2-year A.A.S. created 1-year high school program

Six wet labs, computer lab, cell culture facility (approximately 50% of this space is shared with Jordan School District) 2 FT faculty 50 college students; 65 graduates Approximately 10 dual credit/concurrent credit high school programs 4-year transfer option The Salt Lake Community College Biotechnology Program

High School Program Partnerships One year, open to juniors or seniors Developed at the same time as the college program >10 high schools > 500 high school students Emphasis on hands on, problem-solving Concurrent enrollment credit

UVU built a new degree on SLCC’s existing 2 year degree UVU agreed to offer enough upper division credits on SLCC campus so that students would not need to commute The degree includes a requirement for at least 10 cr hours of internship/independent research The UVU Partnership

The SLCC Biotech Pipeline High School Program (Do I care?) AAS or AS Program Adult Learner (Can I do it?) Employment Baccalaureate Program Graduate/Professional But a major challenge emerges in all parts of this pipeline: Approx 65% high school students juniors FLEXIBLE college internships Real-world research opportunities

Biomanufacturing Program

WORKFORCE TRAINING NEEDS Based on query of industry representatives in DACUM process, Sept 2004 Foundational core skills desired: Quality control & assurance Process validation Equipment qualification Current GMPs / GLPs Federal regulations

Biomanufacturing Program Development Funded by a $1.9+ million Dept of Labor Community-Based Job Training (CBJT) grant awarded to SLCC Newly retrofitted facilities at Granite Technical Institute include : Wet & Dry labs Clean room : Class 100,000 / ISO 8, or better High tech instrumentation lab Engineering / machine shop

PROGRAM OVERVIEW Complements SLCC’s Biotechnology Technician AAS program and AS transfer program Provides practical workforce training for biotech manufacturing setting Supports highly diverse Utah biotech industry (main sectors: natural products/dietary supplements, medical devices, pharma)

BIOMANUFACTURING: CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION DIPLOMA & AAS First academic certificate (for SLCC & high school students) 2 semesters / 30 credit hours total Provides the foundational knowledge and skills for entry- to mid- level associate / technician positions in PRODUCTION, QUALITY, and PROCESS DEVELOPMENT job families General understanding of quality systems and federal regulations Basic critical thinking skills for troubleshooting / problem-solving o Diploma : +1 semester / 47 credit hours total o AAS : +2 semesters / 65-69 credit hours total Provides advanced knowledge and skills relevant to the biotech manufacturing industry

InnovaBio for Biomanufacturing? It’s a great idea, but problems emerge… How can products that require the rigors of GMP be contracted to our students from companies? But, the need and the potential for hands on training remains. Enter StudentFactured

We have partnered with our business group to build on the concept of a manufacturing enterprise within our department. Potential products: Restriction enzymes, markers, plasmids, kits, etc. Customers: Educational partners
