1 Welcome to 4 th Grade Parent Orientation Night July 14, 2008 6:00-6:30

2 Attendance 7:55- 2:45 If your child arrives after 8:05, they are considered tardy. Please walk them to the office and check them in. Due to safety issues, there will be no early checkout after 2:15. See Parent Handbook for details. All absences are unexcused until a note is received from a parent or guardian.

3 Parent Visitation We welcome parent visits to our classroom; however, all visitors MUST sign in at the office prior to coming to the classroom. Parent volunteers are needed for Extended team planning and other classroom needs. Please look for the Volunteer form in the brown packet. There is also a sign up sheet for specific dates for Extended Planning on the white board that you may sign before you leave.

4 Behavior Plan Classroom Rules: *Follow directions the first time given *Respect other’s space, property, and ideas *Raise your hand and be patient *Stay seated and work quietly *Complete all assignments *Be polite and respectful

5 Consequences If a student chooses to break a rule: 1)Written Warning 2) Logical consequence 3) Time-out 4) Phone call to parent 5) Principal’s Office A discipline log will be kept to document both positive and negative behavior.

8 Emergency Procedures Fire Drills (Once a month) Tornado Drills Code 300- In the event of a real emergency, please be patient and follow all staff instructions.

9 Title I Parent Academy Compact for Learning Extended Learning To insure our continued Title I funds, please fill out and return a free/reduced lunch form.

10 Homework Policy Weekly homework will consist of 30-45 minutes per night, normally Monday – Thursday. Your child is expected to write in their Writer’s Notebook each night. Your child is also expected to read each night for a minimum of 30 minutes, including weekends. Record the book title and sign in the agenda daily.

11 Student Agenda Each student will receive an agenda. The agenda is an excellent tool in which to record all homework assignments, project due dates, upcoming tests and other important reminders. After checking your child’s completed homework and other information, please initial the agenda.

12 BEAR Club Being Extraordinary and Responsible Criteria *All homework complete on time, all classwork complete on time, and agenda signed daily by parents. * Follows classroom behavior plan daily. *Awards will be given at the end of each 9-week session.

13 Weekly Folders Will be sent home every Wednesday with the previous week’s work. We will be tracking progress with assessments. Please sign and return all assessments after reviewing them. Class averages will be recorded next to the student score for you to compare your child’s score with the class.

15 Testing Fourth grade students are required to take the End of Grade (EOG) test in Reading and Math. A K-12 local Writing Assessment will be given this year in lieu of the Fourth Grade State Writing test.

16 Tentative Field Trips NC Symphony Beaufort Historical Society Tour NC Aquarium Outer Banks Drama Presentation Water Safety at the YMCA ***We will need chaperones for all field trips. ***All trips must be paid for in advance and the cost is non- refundable.

17 Conference Opportunities Many issues can be resolved through email or telephone conversations. However, if a conference is needed we will make every effort to schedule it at a convenient time for everyone involved.

18 Awesomeville Fair Tentative Date : April 17, 2009 This is our major PTA Fund-raiser. Each grade level will have a booth with games and prizes. We will have a class theme basket for the silent auction. We will need volunteers to help run the booth and donate items for the class basket.

19 Community Service Projects This fall we will be raising money to purchase bikes for Toys for Tots. We think it is important to teach children to be empathetic towards the problems of others in our community. In the spring we will be holding a book drive to collect reading materials for our troops. We will be asking for parent support in our activities.
