13 SUCCESS WITH SAFETY PROGRAMS IDEAS IDEAS A international mining company was offering their own safety program. After the first year, they asked Proforma if they would evaluate and assist in implementing the program. The goal was to increase safety awareness and better recognize safe work achievements for the mining employees. Some people’s challenges create other people’s ideas. Proforma went to work. SOLUTIONS SOLUTIONS To maximize employee interest, Proforma helped create an 11-tier award program. Each tier had at least eight items that the employees could choose from when they achieved their required safety levels. Proforma also calculates the hours of safe work and distribution of products on behalf of the mining company. We have also offered the use of an online company store, allowing mining employees to view and select their preferred items easily and quickly via the Internet.

14 SUCCESS WITH SAFETY PROGRAMS RESULTS RESULTS By creating a multi-tiered, multi-option safety program, the mining employees keep focused as they work safely towards “purchasing” awards that have individual importance to each person. Additionally, the mining company was able to purchase their promotional items through Proforma at prices far below what they could have found on their own. And, by using the online company store, the company was able to track awards so they can recognize individuals at the appropriate times. Although cost savings weren’t an initial reason for implementing their safety program, the mining company has noticed significant cost reductions due to a decrease in accident frequency and severity. In 2006 the client had a 50% decline in accident frequency and severity. The mining company has received national recognition, and has been a runner-up, several times in recent years for the lowest frequency of accidents of mining contractors in Ontario. This company, with the assistance of Proforma Synergy, is sending a message to their competition and employees that safety in the workplace is important.
