2 Title of the Project: Earth Science (Planets): Podcast Grade Level: Textbook: High School Project Summary This lesson is intended to expand upon students' basic speaking and research skills. Students are expanding their knowledge of Earth Science (Planets) after classroom discussion utilizing the Science Textbook and LACOE Pacing Plan. First, students research planet of personal interest. During class sessions, students use multiple online news sources to research up-to-date information that helps them form and communicate their opinions / facts about their planet; practice working with podcasting tools; and create and share a 3 – 4 1/2-minute narrative podcast in class.

3 Literacy Standards Writing Strategies 1.1 Establish a controlling impression or coherent thesis that conveys a clear and distinctive perspective on the subject and maintain a consistent tone and focus throughout the piece of writing. 1.2 Use precise language, action verbs, sensory details, appropriate modifiers, and the active rather than the passive voice. Writing Applications 2.3 Write expository compositions, including analytical essays and research reports: Convey information and ideas from primary and secondary sources accurately and coherently.

4 Technology Standards Addressed Research and Technology 1.3 Use clear research questions and suitable research methods (e.g., library, electronic media, personal interview) to elicit and present evidence from primary and secondary sources. 1.5 Synthesize information from multiple sources and identify complexities and discrepancies in the information and the different perspectives found in each medium (e.g., almanacs, microfiche, news sources, in-depth field studies, speeches, journals, technical documents). 1.8 Design and publish documents by using advanced publishing software and graphic programs. Evaluation and Revision 1.9 Revise writing to improve the logic and coherence of the organization and controlling perspective, the precision of word choice, and the tone by taking into consideration the audience, purpose, and formality of the context.

6 Podcast Worksheet PODCAST STEPS TO SUCCESS: Length of Podcast: approximately 3 -- 4 1/2 minutes. Use the storyboard to help you plan your podcast. Record your podcast in Audacity. Export your podcast as a.mp3 file to the desktop. Save it. Have your teacher get the html to embed it. Podcast Outline Create a script/storyboard of your podcast. Music Intro, Fade in and Fade out mixed into intro - find music from Discovery Education or other resource provided by your teacher. Introduction - Tell us who you are - NO LAST NAMES, PLEASE! Begin actual Podcast (Content) Music Exit, Fade in and Fade out
