8 The Sanitarium’s Sins

9 Words of Warning on Flesh Foods
Letter written from Sydney Australia to Dr. J.H. Kellogg, July 26, 1896: The Lord would bring His people into a position where they will not touch or taste the flesh of dead animals. I write to you, my brother, that the giving of prescriptions for the eating of flesh of animals may no more be practiced in our sanitariums. There is no excuse for this. Let us make known in our institutions that there is no longer a meat table. If patronage is less, so let it be. (Kress Collection, page 32.)

10 Words of Warning on Fashion
Dress is not in accordance with the fashions of the world, that is why it is considered objectionable. Diseases of every type is brought upon the body through unhealthful fashionable style of dress; And the fact should be made prominent that a reform must take place, before treatment will effect a cure. Testimony to the Physicians & Helpers of the Sanitarium, pages 58, 74. There must be a change in that Sanitarium. I lift up my voice in protest against the course pursued there in conforming to the habits and customs of the world. Those who are connected with that institution should be examples as reformers. Dr. Kellogg took his stand against the dress reform, he made a wrong move…

11 Words of Warning on Worldly Amusements
If the Sanitarium shall retrograde as rapidly in the future as it has done in the past, in introducing worldly amusements and theatrical performances, the Lord will withdraw His protecting care from that institution. His frown is upon all these things. As soon as these entertainments are introduced, the objections to theater-going are removed from many minds, and the plea that moral and high-toned scenes are to be acted at the theater, breaks down the last barrier. Testimonies for Physicians and Helpers of the Sanitarium, pages

12 The Battle Creek Sanitarium
Burned down on February 18, 1902 No lives were lost E. G. White had foretold its demise It was a foreshadow of what would happen to the church spiritually

13 Ruin of Jerusalem Compared to Battle Creek
I have been looking over some of my writings, and I find that warnings on this point were given years ago. It is plainly stated that the buildings in Battle Creek should not be enlarged, that building should not be added to building to increase facilities there. We were instructed not to accumulate interests in that one place, but to enlarge our sphere of labor. There was danger that Battle Creek would become as Jerusalem of old--a powerful center. If we do not heed these warnings, the evils that ruined Jerusalem will come upon us. Pride, self-exaltation, neglect of the poor, and partiality to the wealthy--these were the sins of Jerusalem. Today when large interests are built up in one place, the workers are tempted to become lifted up in selfishness and pride. When they yield to this temptation they are not laborers together with God. 8 T p. 133.

14 Sanitarium Fall Was Due to Unbelief
If we yield to this temptation, it will bring upon us the same perils that fell upon ancient Jerusalem. We shall fail to know God and to represent Him in character. We need to watch ourselves closely lest we fall because of unbelief, as did the Jews. We are to work unselfishly. We are to feel a deep interest in the establishment and growth of other institutions besides those over which we have supervision. I sincerely wish that the sanitarium were miles away from Battle Creek. From the light given me of God, I know this would be better for its spirituality and usefulness. 8 T p. 134.

15 The New Sanitarium The new sanitarium had 5 floors
It was 550 feet (167 m) long It had two anexes which were an additional 500 feet (153 m) long It had marble floors with ornate mosaics Capacity for >1,000 patients They contracted the same Italian artist who worked on the Library of Congress

17 A Call for Reformation A Reformation Needed. I have been
instructed that a reformation is needed… 8 T p. 138. Unless there is a reformation, calamity will overtake the publishing house, and the world will know the reason. 8 T p. 96 (November 1901)

18 The Review and Herald the largest publishing house in the world in 1900
Review and Herald Publishing building, Battle Creek, Michigan

19 The Review & Herald Publishing House
was destroyed by fire on December 30, 1902 Dr. Kellogg’s Living Temple was on the presses Proof that the reformation was not realized

20 Elder Waggoner & Jones sided with Dr. Kellogg
While living in the Carroll Manor House, Ellen White received a vision in which she seemed to be in a large company. "One not known to those present stepped forward" and sounded a message of warning to Dr. Paulson and Dr. Sadler, urging them to break their bonds with Dr. Kellogg and to be careful not to spoil their experience with philosophy and vain deceit. "Cut loose, cut loose is my message," she wrote in a letter to the physicians.--Letter 279, 1904. The text of the letter was much the same as in the letter addressed to Elders Jones and Waggoner, who were now associated with Dr. Kellogg in Battle Creek. The messenger who was speaking to them indicated that these men were in a mist and a fog, unaware of the seductive sentiments in The Living Temple. She quoted 1 Timothy 4:1, "Be not deceived; many will 'depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils.'" She added, "We have now before us the alpha of this danger. The omega will be of a most startling nature."--Letter 263, 1904. 5BIO 348.4

21 Alonso T. Jones …but when Living Temple came out, and some of our ministers told me that there was in it nothing but what I had been teaching all my life, I saw how great the danger was. I saw that blindness had fallen upon some who had long known the truth. I pray that the Lord will open the eyes of these ministers, that they may see the differences between light and darkness, and between truth and error. 1SAT 343.5 Alonzo T. Jones

22 Elder E. J. Waggoner, M.D. Accepted the teachings of the Living Temple
Sided with Dr. Kellogg Became estranged from his wife Divorced and Remarried Abandoned the church E. J. Waggoner, wife, and children

23 The General Conference President
A. G. Daniells Rejected the Living Temple ideas Worried about A.T. Jones who was siding with Dr. Kellogg Sought Sister White’s help in meeting the crisis A. G. Daniells

24 From Elmshaven Sister White sent messages of warning and admonition.

25 The Alpha of a Train of Heresies
One, and another, and still another are presented to me as having been led to accept the pleasing fables that mean the sanctification of sin. Living Temple contains the alpha of a train of heresies. 11MR 247.2 I was forbidden to talk with Dr. Kellogg on this subject, because it is not a subject to be talked about. And I was instructed that certain sentiments in Living Temple were the Alpha of a long list of deceptive theories. SAT 343.4

26 Three Attacks of the Alpha Apostasy or Living Temple

27 The 1901 General Conference Session in Battle Creek
with Ellen G. White preaching Ellen G. White addressing 1901 General Conference Session, Battle Creek, Michigan

28 William C. White “I did not read Living Temple, though I had it in my library.” 1SAT 341.3 Finally my son said to me, "Mother, you ought to read at least some parts of the book, that you may see whether they are in harmony with the light that God has given you." He sat down beside me, and together we read the preface, and most of the first chapter, and also paragraphs in other chapters. William C. White cir. 1890’s (C. Hemus, Photographer, Auckland, New Zealand)

29 The Living Temple Contains the Alpha Apostasy
Living Temple contains the alpha of these theories. I knew that the omega would follow in a little while; and I trembled for our people. I knew that I must warn our brethren and sisters not to enter into controversy over the presence and personality of God. The statements made in Living Temple in regard to this point are incorrect. 1SM As we read, I recognized the very sentiments against which I had been bidden to speak in warning during the early days of my public labors. When I first left the State of Maine, it was to go through Vermont and Massachusetts, to bear a testimony against these sentiments.

30 Calling Dr. Kellogg to Repentance
She also wrote to Dr. Kellogg, commenting on the Berrien Springs meeting and its aftermath: (5BIO 348.4) You might have gone from the Berrien Springs meeting a very different man had you understood the real situation, had you realized that Satan in a masterly way was playing the game of life for your soul. Had you seen your peril as it was presented to me, you would have fallen on the Rock, and been broken. Your only hope is to fall on the Rock. If you do not, it will fall on you, and will break you beyond remedy.--Letter 271, (5BIO 349.1)

31 Kellogg’s Apostasy In 1904, Dr. Kellogg left with:
The Battle Creek Sanitarium The Battle Creek Food Company Mexican Health Institute 4,000 persons followed him including many physicians 1907, Dr. Kellogg was disfellowshipped J. H. Kellogg

32 The Omega Apostasy In the book Living Temple there is presented the alpha of deadly heresies. The omega will follow, and will be received by those who are not willing to heed the warning God has given. 1SM, p. 200

33 The Great War or World War I
The Omega Apostasy was liberty of conscience to transgress God’s law.

34 Alpha and Omega Apostasy—compared and contrasted
Dr. J.H. Kellogg works against the Testimonies Pantheism—God is in everything 4,000 leave Treated the Sabbath lightly Abandoned Dress Reform Adopted worldly amusements Served Flesh Foods at the Sanitarium Pride was the root of the fall General Conference fulfills the Testimonies’ predictions of apostasy Liberty of conscience—each conscience is God 98% of the church goes into apostasy Transgressed the Sabbath in military service Wore a military uniform Engaged in world war Ate flesh floods at the front line and in the military Pride was the root of the fall

35 Liberty of Conscience-- Was granted to go to War
We grant to each of our church members absolute liberty to serve his country, at all time and in all places, in accord with the dictates of his personal conscientious conviction.—RH March 6, 1924; volume 101, pages 4,5. The nominal SDA Church, not God, granted this liberty to go and engage to war It applies to all time including the 6th and 7th plague with the Battle of Armageddon and the war of Gog and Magog It applies to all places including Armageddon and around the city of God after the millennium

36 Liberty of Conscience condemned in the Scriptures
I Corinthians 8:9 But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak. Galatians 5:13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only [use] not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. I Peter 2:16 As free, and not using [your] liberty for a cloak of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. Jeremiah 34:17 Therefore thus saith the LORD; Ye have not hearkened unto me, in proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother, and every man to his neighbour: behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, saith the LORD, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.

37 Liberty of Conscience Granted was to transgress God’s law
I Peter 2:19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.

38 Testimonies on Liberty of Conscience
Satan has continued with men the same policy which he pursued with the angels. His spirit now reigns in the children of disobedience. Like him they seek to break down the restraints of the law of God, and promise men liberty through transgression of its precepts. Reproof of sin still arouses the spirit of hatred and resistance. When God's messages of warning are brought home to the conscience, Satan leads men to justify them-selves, and to seek the sympathy of others in their course of sin. GC (1888), page 500.2 Christ gave no ecclesiastical right to forgive sin, nor to sell indulgences, that men may sin without incurring the displeasure of God, nor did he give his servants liberty to accept a gift or bribe for cloaking sin, that it may escape merited censure.—Spirit of Prophecy, volume 3, page 245, (1878). And was all this suffering undergone to give men the liberty to transgress the law of God?--No, no.—ST, December 9, 1897 par. 7.

39 Church Leaders Say "We're Sorry" German and Austrian churches apologize for Holocaust actions BY MARK A. KELLNER, assistant director for news and information of the General Conference Communication Department During World War I a portion of the German Adventist church had split off, opposing any military service. This led the National Socialists in 1936 to ban the so-called "Reform Movement" during their time in power. Brugger said concern over a Nazi closure of the main Adventist churches may have weighed on leaders in that era. "I think during these times the official leaders of our church were afraid of losing the control over the church and losing the church because the political authorities had already [confused] our church with the Reform movement," he explained. "I think our leaders were afraid to lose the official recognition of our church, so therefore maybe they were not [as faithful] to our beliefs as would have been necessary." We had to realize that one wrong statement, one wrong move by a person meant he could end up in a concentration camp," Pöhler said of that era. "[That was the] reason why we excluded and disfellowshipped Jewish-born Adventists from our midst: If a local church had not done this, [the Nazis] would have closed the church, taken the elder to prison, and it would have meant the whole church would be forbidden."

40 The Iceberg Allegory One night a scene was clearly presented before me. A vessel was upon the waters, in a heavy fog. Suddenly the lookout cried, "Iceberg just ahead!" There, towering high above the ship, was a gigantic iceberg. An authoritative voice cried out, "Meet it!" There was not a moment's hesitation. It was a time for instant action. The engineer put on full steam, and the man at the wheel steered the ship straight into the iceberg. With a crash she struck the ice. There was a fearful shock, and the iceberg broke into many pieces, falling with a noise like thunder to the deck. The passengers were violently shaken by the force of the collisions, but no lives were lost. The vessel was injured, but not beyond repair. She rebounded from the contact, trembling from stem to stern, like a living creature. Then she moved forward on her way. 1SM 205.3, 206 (1904).

41 The Titanic Allegory * An iceberg drowned the Titanic
* What icebergs do you have in your life?

43 Before the Fall is Pride
Proverbs 16:18-19: Pride [goeth] before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. Better [it is to be] of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud. Ezekiel 30:6: Thus saith the LORD; They also that uphold Egypt shall fall; and the pride of her power shall come down: from the tower of Syene shall they fall in it by the sword, saith the Lord GOD.

44 Jesus is Coming—Are you ready to sink your pride?
