Chapter One

If you were the Vietcong watching a group of GIs approach, what would be your strategy for defeating the American patrol? What weapons would you use to do that?

Switch Gears…You’re still in a war but the war is currently being waged in a moral jungle with Satan waiting to ambush you. Strategy #1—Satan will try to effectively alienate and sever the relationship you have with your wife. If you were advising Satan about weapons he could use to destroy your relationship with your wife, what would you tell him? Strategy #2—Sever relationship with your children…How would you advise Satan?

Strategy #1—Disunity with Spouse – Ephesians 5 – 1 Corinthians 13 – Philippians 2 Strategy #2—Disunity with children – Deuteronomy 6 – Ephesians 6 – Rules without Relationship equals Rebellion – “When the kids are up and available for relational time - don't be sitting in front of the computer or TV- get away from there- be with your kids- wait for them to go to bed- and then turn back on the TV or computer!!!! “

Reread that statistics on page 22 and 23 and discuss the following questions – One of the hardest things for men to come to grips with is, “These things could happen to me and my family.” Why is that so tough to admit? – Read 1 Corinthians 10:1-13. c.f. Proverbs 11:2, 16:18, 29:23. Why won’t one of more of the things listed on pages 22 and 23 happen to you and your family? What are you doing to actively prevent them from happening? – Some of you have already been a victim of Satan’s attacks. Share with the other guys things you’ve learned that can keep them off the casualty list.

1 Corinthians 10:1-13, " 1 Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, 2 all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ. 5 But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. 6 Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. 7 And do not become idolaters as were some of them. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.” 8 Nor let us commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell; 9 nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents; 10 nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer.

1 Corinthians 10:11-13, “Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. 12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it." Proverbs 11:2, " 2 When pride comes, then comes shame; But with the humble is wisdom." Proverbs 16:18, " 18 Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall." Proverbs 29:23, " 23 A man’s pride will bring him low, But the humble in spirit will retain honor."

Having the Best of Both Worlds Reread the paragraph about Tom Peters on page 30. The desire to have both a satisfying personal life and a full, satisfying, hard-working professional life. But, as Peters points out, we can’t have both. – Have you come to grips with the reality that you can’t have both? – What factors from your past make this easy or difficult to accept? – What factors in your present experience make it easy or difficult to accept?

Getting Ready for Satan’s Attack There’s no doubt we’re in a war for our families, and Satan is taking aim at us. When a man gets serious about leading his family for Christ, he can, in the words of this chatper, “…expect the shelling to start.” In what ways is Satan lobbing his SCUDs into your life? Are there areas where your defense is starting to crack? Is so, ask the guys in the group to pray for you. If a man is passive and indifferent to the things of God and the spiritual leadership of his home, attack is not necessary. He is already “neutralized”. If you’re not being attacked, how has Satan already neutralized you? What is it going to take to get you back in the fight?
