What is an refugee As a class we read the book Gerveli’s Journey Students were asked to give their own explanation of what an refugee is. Using a P4C approach students asked questions about the story and we then voted on the question to discuss. This lasted three sessions outcomes Students understand the term refugee They understand some of the issues facing refugees Start to tackle some of the negative images attached to refugess.

Where do we belong? Talked about our own community where do we belong Examples of communities within our area what are the advantages of belonging to a community> Students then selected two communities that were important to them and explained why using art We then looked at what global meant and explored what global links we have within our school commuinty Link with Ghana University Basic Schools ( very strong link) South African Primary and Secondary school What are the benefits of this link. Outcomes: Students understand what a community is both local and global

What do we have in common with each other? To reinforce what is global, students worked in small groups and were given 22 photos they had to match the photo to each caption. As a group they chose one picture to share and discuss with the rest of the group. Individually students were asked to choose one picture and write what they share in common with the picture. They then found out about the country and presented this information in a PowerPoint and then make a whole class displaya using a map Outcomes: Students have a sense of where they belong. They also recognise that they have a connection with people no matter where they belong. Creating a class display they get to find more about our global community.

A Refugees Journey In groups students read 4 children’s refugee stories. They identify and write about 4 points 1.Why did they have to leave their country? 2.Are they safe now? 3.What do you have in common with the each child? 4.What is different about your life and theirs? Outcomes: What would it be like to be in this situation. To understand some of the issues refugees face. What would you take if you had to leave home in a hurry? Students have to imagine themselves in one of the above situations they have 10 minutes to pack their case. What would they take and why?

Wali’s Story Students read the story of Wali as a class. About a boy who had to leave Kabul. Discuss what danger Wali faced. Did he want to leave his country? Why was he forced to leave? Students then create an Afghanistan typical rice and chicken dish. Outcomes: To understand why people have to leave their country. To sample food from another culture Students really enjoyed smelling and tasting different spices they were not familiar with. All of them enjoyed cooking the dish and all enjoyed sitting down and eating this.

Sudanese Boys March As a class we read about the Sudanese boys march to freedom. I created a PowerPoint with images and key words for each part of the story The class had to imagine they were reporters in the refugee camp in Kenya and write a newspaper article telling the story of the Sudanese march to freedom. They had to interview refugee boys and create photos with captions. Outcomes: Students understand what life is like in a refugee camp. What lengths people will go to fight for an education. What would you need in a refugee camp? The class work in pairs and have 30 items they are given a scenario and then asked to chose only 10 items and then what is their top three items. The pair have to read out their list and then justify why they chose the top three. Teacher to play devil advocate Students can make changes to their list. At the end it is hoped they all chose, clean water, shelter, fire and food. Outcome: To understand the basic necessities to live.

Celebrating Cultural Diversity To celebrate the diverse community we live in. Students were invited to perform at the Newcastle Civic Centre Cultural Diversity Event. We chose to celebrate something that was local to us. The students created a dance to accompany the Lambton Worm, they used drama and dance to retell the story They performed this at the Civic Centre where there performances that reflected cultures from around the world. Students were able to access information about refugees from the stalls and presentations. To finish the event there was a world buffet where students could try food from India, Africa and Poland.
