2 UNIVNew Student Orientation  UNIV has proven to lead to greater success of our Associates students with less than 24 credits.  New Student Orientations lead to greater success of our Masters, Bachelors as well as Associates students with 24 credits or more.

3  When discussing an anticipated start date with the student as part of the enrollment process, always set the expectation that they will take the New Student Orientation.  As soon as the student is approved in APIN status, give Orientation sign up instructions.

4  Discuss the value of the Orientation ◦ Reduce stress and build confidence because they will be familiar with the Online Learning System (OLS) prior to starting class ◦ Save time because they will know where to find the syllabus, materials, assignments, and discussion forums ◦ Hands-on practice with posting discussion threads and assignments ◦ Helps to establish a routine and focus time management skills ◦ Knowledge of University of Phoenix resources for success:  Center for Writing Excellence, Center for Math Excellence, Learning Team Toolkit, Phoenix Career Services, Library (EBSCO host), SkillSoft tutorials ◦ Provided as a free service as part of the admissions process

5  Discuss the format of the Orientation ◦ Three-day non-graded workshop ◦ Available online from early morning Wednesday to midnight Friday (Arizona time) ◦ Log-in any time ◦ Same format as class ◦ Day 1: Features of the OLS and University of Phoenix policies ◦ Day 2: Center for Writing Excellence; Center for Math Excellence ◦ Day 3: Online Library

6 The New Student Orientation is free of charge, fully online and you do not get graded for it. It’s just for you to get familiar with the classroom and the resources specific to University of Phoenix. Below, you will find the directions on how to register for the Orientation and other workshops. Log on to your student website at https://ecampus.phoenix.edu/https://ecampus.phoenix.edu/ Once you log on click on PROGRAMS on the top of the page. From here you need to click on STUDENT WORKSHOPS. On the left, you will need to click on NEW STUDENT. The workshop I recommend is the NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION – ONLINE BACHELOR AND MASTER DEGREE STUDENTS. If you click on Show Available Workshops, you will see the different dates for this workshop and you can register from here. You will want to register for the workshop that begins on Wednesday, XXX 00 and ends on Friday, XXX 00. Notice that the Orientation starts on a Wednesday and ends Friday (midnight Arizona time). You can do them at any time during these three days. Please let me know if this helps or if you get stuck on anything.

8  When the student signs up for the Orientation (original format): Student has registered for workshop New Student Orientation - Online Bachelor and Master Degree Students with start date of X/XX/2013 and end date of X/XX/2013  When the student signs up for the Orientation (New Classroom): Student has registered for workshop New Classroom Student Orientation - Online with start date of X/XX/2013 and end date of X/XX/2013

9  Set a task to contact student on the first day (Wednesday) of the Orientation. ◦ If voice-to-voice, offer to take a look at the Orientation together to review the activities and assignments. ◦ If not able to speak to the student, leave a message asking for a call back and re-set the Orientation check-in task for Thursday. ◦ Monitor Orientation attendance daily.

10  Set a task to contact student on the last day (Friday) of the Orientation.  Check participation under the Attendance tab of IS3E. ◦ If voice-to-voice, discuss the activities and assignments. Answer any questions or concerns. ◦ If not able to speak to the student, leave a message asking for a call back and re-set the Orientation check-in task for Monday. ◦ SAMS Attendance History site= http://sams.apollogrp.edu/sams/SamsSupport.do

11  Set Task in IS3E to schedule pre-walk and walk-to-class based on student’s participation in the Orientation  A student’s engagement in the Orientation can be a great indicator of their readiness and motivation to start class on their anticipated start date.

12  Setting the expectation that every student takes an Orientation prior to starting classes, will increase our students’ success in their credit-bearing courses.  Enrollment Advisors can send personalized emails or walk students through the Orientation sign-up process.  Enrollment Advisors can set tasks in IS3E to verify enrollment, monitor attendance, and assure that our students complete the appropriate Orientation.
