2 What is the Duke University Talent Identification Program? Founded in 1980 Self-supporting non-profit educational organization Serves nearly 400,000 gifted students each year Identifies academically talented young people Provides fulfilling educational opportunities

17 How to Qualify Currently in 4 th or 5 th grade Scored at 90 th percentile or above on a grade-level standardized achievement, aptitude, mental ability test, or approved state criterion-referenced test

18 Financial Aid Duke TIP awarded over $1.5 million of financial aid in 2005 Talent Search Fee Waivers TIP waives the $25 fee for students who qualify for free or reduced lunch programs

19 Important Dates January Schools receive initial 4th/5th Grade Talent Search materials. Applications are distributed to qualified 4 th /5th graders. TIP Web registration opens. March 1 FINAL postmark deadline for submitting applications by mail. March 17 Final deadline for applying online. May Merit packet mailed to students -- includes Certificate of Achievement, Navigator newsletter, and Staying on Course. July Academic 411 is mailed. September Navigator newsletter fall issue is mailed to students. October EXPLORE registration materials are mailed from ACT to all current 5 th and 6 th grade participants enrolled in the 4th/5th Grade Talent Search. December Writing Contest information mailed to Talent Search participants. January EXPLORE testing (dates and sites are set by ACT). February EXPLORE testing (dates and sites are set by ACT). March Writing Contest winners announced. April Navigator newsletter spring issue is mailed to students. May-June Highest scorers on EXPLORE test invited to State Recognition Ceremonies.

21 Important Information Register only once in 4 th or 5 th grade. 4th/5th Grade Talent Search benefits continue through the 6th grade year. Duke TIP offers the 7th Grade Talent Search to qualifying 7th graders. Enrollment in the 4th/5th Grade Talent Search does not automatically qualify students for the Duke TIP 7th Grade Talent Search.
