5 Start-up difficulties by gender: Project “FFEMALE” / No. 2013-1-IS1-LEO05-02635Kaunas / 2015 05 28 No. 2013-1-IS1-LEO05-02635 14 EU countries, 2005 Source: OECD (2011), “Obstacles to entrepreneurship by gender”, in Entrepreneurship at a Glance 2011, OECD Publishing. http://dx.doi.org/10.1787/9789264097711-22-en

6 Complex picture: Women are less keen than men on starting their own business. Women entrepreneurs continue to be a minority in all countries. Enterprises owned by women are significantly smaller and less represented in capital-intensive sectors and these and other factors tend to penalise them in terms of sales, profits and labour productivity. Women in business are more often seen in the service sector rather than production. Women entrepreneurs rely substantially less than men on loans, both for start-up and for financing their activities. Project “FFEMALE” / No. 2013-1-IS1-LEO05-02635Kaunas / 2015 05 28 No. 2013-1-IS1-LEO05-02635

11 Needs of female entrepreneurs: Stop gender grouping - segregation created may inadvertently be reinforcing the gender gap further. Support with business education but also to raise their self- esteem (role models: successful female businesswomen, and their achievements). Encourage female entrepreneurs to apply for grants and support available: taking risks, even though fear of risk can be seen as a positive attribute. Strengthen and encourage women in technological knowledge and social media as important in connection with marketing online. Because of difference between rural and urban - high quality web based teaching material and online support and network. Given flexible hours to accommodate school hours, or at the least offer some form of discounted childcare.
