4 © 2002 Addison Wesley Educational Publishers, Inc. Main Ideas and Supporting Details  The main idea of a paragraph or essay is a broad or general statement.  The details that support it are specifics.  The details add more information about the main idea.

5 © 2002 Addison Wesley Educational Publishers, Inc. Finding Unstated Main Ideas  Recognize the supporting details in a reading.  Based on those details, decide what the main idea is.
